DD(6) - blood in urine

luciemule · 18/01/2008 17:48

This morning, DD (6)said it hurt when she weed and she kept holding back from going. I told her she could have cystitis and explained what it was.

Tonight, she had a bit of a wee accident and I noticed a definite streak of blood in her pants.
Is this normal for cystitis or could it be something else?

I thought cystitis is most likely as she has chronic constipation so is more likely to get uterine infections.

Take her to the dr, my daghter had cysytis very babdly age three but I don't remeber seeing any blood though cystitis can do that.

tbh I'd try to get her seen sooner than Monday . It may well be quite advanced if there is blood now.

tortoiseSHELL · 18/01/2008 17:56

Tbh I would take her to emergency doctor/A&E tomorrow morning - I remember my brother having this at a similar age, and he was fine, just had an infection, but the hospital were very rigorous in their checks - it's one of those things that is probably absolutely fine but you don't want to mess around! You could even take her tonight if you can, just to be on the safe side.

Take her now, dd1 was on antibiotics for 2 months when she had hers as it kept recurring and the strain was different each time requiring different antibiotics. DD got to the point where she would leap from the toilet in agony.

luciemule · 19/01/2008 07:46

Thanks everyone. She's been for a wee this morning and said there was no blood.

I'll look again later and if there's any blood, I'll take her to the out of hours doc.
Poor little poppet - there's always something!

You really should take her to be seen whether there is blood in her urine today or not. The fact that she was in pain and there was blood yesterday means there is certainly something going on-urine infections in children are taken much more seriously than in adults and need investigation and treatment. Really, you should take her today.

Yes, I agree, she needs to be seen before Monday, it can very quickly spread to the kidneys!

tortoiseSHELL · 19/01/2008 08:38

Yes you definitely don't want any scarring/infection in the kidneys.

loopylou6 · 19/01/2008 10:14

hi LM i noticed that u said your daughter said there was no blood in her urine this morning, she is only 6 yes? so maybe she is fibbing coz she doesnt want to go the docs? i really think the fact that it has already been there warrants a trip to the docs who will just do a simeple dipstick urine test to check for infection

LIZS · 19/01/2008 10:17

When I had a uti the othr week I could n't see blood but the test showed there was some. Very unwell I felt too.

luciemule · 19/01/2008 17:32

Ok - good advice - will take asap. Thank you all.

go to Dr...

a friend of mine had to have a kidney removed due to a urine infection aged 7... it can get very nasty and very seriouse very quickly

Twiggypiggy · 19/01/2008 22:39

I had a water infection - their was blood in my urine. It hurt like hell going to the toilet. Needed antibiotics to clear it up.

See if you can get her seen to straight away.

luciemule · 21/01/2008 16:12

Well - took DD to the docs this morning who said there were nitrates in the wee but she's sending it off to be checked in more detail.

She didn't prescibe antibiotics but said she might on Wednesday if there's an infection. She also said they refer them to a paed doc if they have a UTI as a matter of course.

Thank you all for your replies, I might not have done anything otherwise and thought it would clear up on its own - as it does when I get cystitis.
