Its for his kidney dilation picked up on my 20w scan and that hasn't improved since his ultrasound when he was 10 days old...

Has anyone any experience of this? Wil I be able to stay with him? breast feed before and after? I can't imagine if they take him away I will just cry my heart out, he's such a cuddly baby.

He looks such a healthy little baby, I can't believe we have to go through this, a bit of me just wants to tell the doctors we won't be coming but I'm being made to feel its necessary and I do want to know what's causing the dilation (moderate on left and now slightly on right kidney too) but it seems so extreme injecting radio active fluid into his veins ffs!!!!!!

Lizzer, sounds like you have already reached a decision on the ABs but I also asked my friend about them and she said you def should give them to DS as at this point you don't know whether there is reflux from the bladder back up to the kidneys so although a UTI is not that big a deal, if there is reflux and the infection spreads up to the kidneys then the kidneys can be damaged. Her DD had part of one kidney removed at age 3 due to repeated kidney infections caused by UTIs/reflux. In hindsight she says that although traumatic at the time, this was probably the best thing they could have done for her DD as they used the opportunity to fix a number of other related problems (including double ureter) and her DD has never looked back.

Will be thinking of you on Tue.

Before asking a registrar or SHO to put a cannula in, just ask the nurse how many years she has been putting cannulas in. If she has been doing it for years, stick with her (forgive the pun). In my experience, registrars rarely put in cannulas, and if you are not doing something everyday you can lose the skill.

Lizzer two of my dd's had this to check for kidney damage. The only slight stress was having the dye injected and then getting them to lie stock still. It's not at all a distressing thing to watch though, the scan I mean.

Well we're back from hospital! Everything went really well...

The canula -the nurse mentioned how hard it was to get in before i said anything! The doc got it in first time and ds cried and cried but soon was over.

On the way over to xray dept ds fell asleep and REMAINED ASLEEP THROUGHOUT the whole 30 min scan - yipee!!!!! We watched the tracer go through his system and into his nappy! The left kidney is obviously blocked, we could see it. Follow up appt on 11th feb...

The 2 ladies doing the scan were marvellous and answered all our Q's - and got a bit technical which dp liked! Although dp got a bit emotional when ds was put under scanner, he held it together though We held his hand and i stroked his forehead and it was fine...

Just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who posted on here for putting my mind at rest and for a wealth of info that you have shared.

Lennygrrl -thanks so much for the link for pb's- the parcel arrived today, and we started the ab's on sunday, feel better about giving them now

My friend's daughter had a duplex kidney operated on at 8 months at Gt Ormond St. Baby is now one year old and quite healthy indeed.

Lots of luck.
