My doctor has today prescribed me tramadol 50mg for neck and thoracic pain but when I got the pharmacist he seemed quite concerned that I've been given them when I also take venlafaxine. He said it can cause seizures, can anyone please clarify? Made the mistake of telling my mum and now she's stressing and saying it's negligence etc etc.

Phone up your GP who has your medical history in front of them, and ask them. Not your mum or some random on MN.

FictionalCharacter · 21/07/2022 16:34

Didn’t the pharmacist call your GP to query this?

bloodywhitecat · 21/07/2022 16:37

It isn't unusual for a pharmacist to pick up on a clash of drugs, I would absolutely check with your GP.

boymama82 · 21/07/2022 16:38

No he didn't contact them to query but they were mad busy, he just said look out for muscle spasms

I don't think Matilda was rude. That was sensible advice. I certainly wouldn't take medication advice from strangers. Anyone could advise you and say they are a Dr

I'd trust a pharmacist over a GP in regards to meds any day. Surprised he supplied them actually.

Yes, this.

Most doctors won’t even admit to being doctors online, much less give anonymous medical advice. It’s a legal minefield for them.

Double check with the surgery. It’s not unreasonable to do that. Ask reception to look into it for you. They will get a doctor to look at it without you needing to book in again.

Both can increase serotonin so there is a risk of serotonin syndrome (this is extremely rare, but can cause muscle twitching, flu like symptoms and seizures in extreme cases).
Maybe clarify with your GP if you are worried.

celestebellman · 21/07/2022 16:46

(Not a GP, though)

That’s not really quite concerned then. If the pharmacist was concerned they wouldn’t have handed them over.

Call the surgery and ask the receptionist to check with the Duty Dr. Someone will then call you back to confirm/put your mind at rest.

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 21/07/2022 16:56

Not a medic but tramadol and venafaxine both work on serotonin and too much serotonin can cause serotonin syndrome so its preferable that they aren't taken together. My personal experience was awful and I only had one dose of tramadol unfortunately for me it was slow release

boymama82 · 21/07/2022 17:42

@NotanotherboxofFrogs what happened if you don't mind me asking?

Always trust a pharmacist.

snowbellsxox · 21/07/2022 17:59

Not a gp but a receptionist
If you call up they can query this with on call gp for an answer same day if important meds

Vomit, lots and lots of vomit. It was constant, I was like the excorist. I lost over a stone in 24 hours. I was feeling rotten for weeks afterwards. Tramadol is a never again for me. That plus and jerking limbs and body shocks.
