Shingles... again?

First bout of shingles in my early twenties, my final year of uni.

Second in my mid thirties, two years after birth of DC (and after a v stressful six mths including miscarriage and sudden death of loved one).

I have a shit immune system, I get everything going and always have. On a watch and see with GP as they suspect lupus or other autoimmune disorder (sibling has thyroid issues and addisons).

Now the nerve band affected by bouts 1&2 is so painful again (spiky, burning, tingly, tight feeling) that I can barely get the things done that I need to, and I have a disabled child and a child about to start reception, not to mention the summer hols beginning right now!

No rash, yet, but I keep checking and I know what I'm looking for. Is it too late for antivirals? It is SO painful. I am on 2x 30/500 cocodamol and still struggling. I don't know how I will sleep tonight.

I tried GP this morning and redialled 132 times but couldn't get through. I will try again tomorrow but not holding out much hope. Wwyd in my shoes? I'm sore and sad.

If you have no rash you def have a chance with the antivirals.

I’d phone 111 if you can’t get them from GO. You have to access them.

Ive had it 3 times too. It’s shit x

Definitely not too late for antivirals and if it isn't or after could you look into having the shingles vaccination - you may have to pay for it but it might be worth while?

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 20/07/2022 22:06

Not sure I can count how many times since I’ve had my first bout of shingles at 17 (now 49). It’s shite.

Once you know the beginning signs of an attack (burning, soreness I can’t tolerate fabric on, reddening) before the blisters appear antivirals are pretty effective.

I also keep Zovirax cold sore cream in my first aid kit, I’ve found that useful to apply to my side while waiting for the antivirals to be prescribed (or on holiday lol).

It's obviously stress that triggers yours, ask the Gp maybe is there anything you can take to build up your system particularly when you know you are going to find something stressful. X

I have a disabled child to care for so quite a bit of stress!

I’m thinking of asking for the shingles vaccine. Maybe ask for that?

Good plan. I'll have this thread open in front of me if/when they call.
