Hi there is a whole list of questions on there - does child have a rash, swellings round neck, etc etc etc. You could get full advice and get your ds checked out by ringing NHS direct on 0845 4647 if you can't get onto their website. Just to exclude anything serious. If its just a little bug and temperature, stripping him off a bit and giving calpol or baby nurofen should help. When dd was hot over xmas docs told me they worried if temp went over 40, so you'll need to cool him down a bit and keep an eye on him. Hope he feels better soon.

a long list of further questions!

rash?
difficulty breathing?
Is your child difficult to wake, not taking or keeping down fluids, or complaining of the light hurting their eyes?
diarrhoea?
Are there any tender swellings around their jaw and neck?
earache?
Do they have a sore throat, a cough or a runny nose, or are they sneezing?
pain in tummy?
temp lasted for more than 5 days?

Give calpol (10mls) and nurofen (5mls) alternately every 3 hours, keep him in as few clothes as possible, lots of fluids, pop him in a warm bath (usual temp, on your elbow) then take him out and let him air dry - very effective at reducing temp, put a fan on him if you've got it.

If the calpol/nurofen combo hasn't brought it down after a couple of doses I'd ring the docs.

If no to all of them

Self Care
It is safe to manage this problem yourself at home. Regularly give your child paediatric paracetamol oral suspension (available from your local pharmacist) to reduce the temperature (check the instructions on the packet for the right dose). Give them an extra amount of their favourite cool drink or ice lollies. Make sure your child is not overdressed - a vest and nappy or pants is enough clothing for them as long as the house is at the normal room temperature. Cover your child in a light cotton sheet when they are in bed. If the condition gets worse or new symptoms develop, call NHS Direct on 0845 4647. Make sure your child is up to date with all their immunisations. If you are still worried, call NHS Direct on 0845 4647.

Sorry, meant to start that with

If it's just a temp....

My paed says start giving paracetamol when temp hits 39.5 (if no other symptoms). Otherwise keep coolish and watchful.

hi thank you all so much. No the only other symptom he says he has is a back ache so maybe just achey? Doing all that with the meds - just was unsure in kids when the temp was too high and GP needed.Thank you all again.
