5mo sick everytime he sits up

ds is 5 months old and has always been a fairly sickie baby. I thought he was getting better but now he is sick every time i sit him up. I make a point of leaving him for a while after his food before getting him up but it makes no difference. Even if he falls asleep straight after food/milk when he wakes up and i sit him up he'll be sick! Anyone else had this?

posset or projectile vomiting???

zephyrcat · 25/11/2004 18:16

I'm not sure tbh. How little is posseting - is that just like a dribble? sometimes he dribbles it out (but quite a lot) or sometimes it is projectile and covers me and the floor

Its just that I believed the muscle at the top of the tummy isn't that strong in babies so its like a jug .. if a little full up and you turn them up it just comes out again? Any chance he may just be eating a touch too much

one thing I do know for sure is that milk coming out always look a hell of a lot more than it actually is .. try dropping a bit of milk on a muslin and see how far it spreads out .. its fairly amazing

I'll step back and wait for someone who knows more than me to come along

zephyrcat · 25/11/2004 18:23

thanks twiglett. Thats what i was thinking as well - that his stomach/digestive muscles are still immature. He doesnt eat an awful lot though - he does it when he has his normal bottle which is 8oz then once or maybe twice a day he has a little jar of food with a bit of juice.
The doc gave him Gaviscon a couple of months ago which helped a bit but not totally.
Was just seeing if others do it too before i waste an appointment at the docs!!

Having had dd with reflux who was similar, I'd agree that his stomach valve may just not be mature enough to cope with his appetite yet. Can you feed him less but a bit more often (ie. so that he gets the same amount of milk over all but perhaps one bottle a day more). You could use a milk thickener or a thicker formula in the bottle rather than Gaviscon which may help. Also feed him more upright and leave him seated like that - in car seat, bouncy chair or whatever - for about half an hour or a nap before even changing him. Once they can move and sit under their own steam it either starts to get better or gets worse for a while then better - but it usually does get better eventually of its own accord.

zephyrcat · 25/11/2004 18:42

thanks lizs - I wondered about sitting him up more to feed him but wasnt sure if that would make it worse or bring on indigestion!
I feed him in his bouncy seat just now but its not really sitting up. Will def try it out

How do you mean "sit him up"? Can he sit up aunaided or do you mean you prop him up or hold him sitting up? I only ask because I used to find my youngest would be a bit sick if propped up but he could sit in his bouncy chair (more reclined) with no problems.

zephyrcat · 25/11/2004 18:54

he is fine if he's in his bouncy chair - but he's practically flat in that because dd sat in it so it lost some of it's bounce! It's more when he's sitting up either on me or on his own with cushions round him. Almost like by sitting up he's sqeezing it out of him!

All three of mine have done this and with ds1, I too was worried. He did suffer from reflux (seen in a scan) and was prescribed infant gaviscon. Poor wee mite hated the stuff, so I gave up with that and put up with the constant puking little bits everywhere! Needless to say, that stage passed and he's now a healthy 6yo. He stopped doing it around a year or so, as did dd and ds2 is now 10.5mths and it's easing off a good bit. Unless it's huge amounts coming up with great force and he's losing weight, I don't think there's anything to be worried about. If you are worried though, do get it checked out - it sounds like it could be reflux and this should sort itself out in time.

Lonelymum · 25/11/2004 19:06

Could you buy a new bouncy chair and keep dd away from it? Then he would be a bit more upright without being sick maybe. I do agree though that if he is putting on weight, there isn't too much of a problem (except for the mess you have to keep cleaning up -tough luck).

zephyrcat · 25/11/2004 19:10

He's actually putting on a lot less weight in the lastmonth than he has been since he was born, he dropped from the 50th to the 25th centile then in the next 2 weeks he only put on 2oz. I just thought he was slowing down and levelling out - maybe its realted to the being sick. I did think about getting another chair to feed him in but he's almost too long for his bouncy chair now so might try him in his car seat and see how that goes.....

have you got a bumbo .. they're great feeding chairs because it props them upright to begin with

zephyrcat · 25/11/2004 19:12

I've been thinking about those they look perfect for him but am completely skint at the mo!! The school photographer had one the other day for little ones to sit in and he was moaning about it - i felt like stealing it and running away!!!

zephyrcat - i've got a bumbo i never use - you can borrow that for as long as you need it - just if I could have it back to flog when you are done with it!

zephyrcat · 26/11/2004 10:37

MTS that would be excellent! Are you sure? He probably wont need it for long as he's getting better at sitting up so he'll be in a highchair before we know it That's really kind of you

There are loads of great homeopathic remedies for reflux - Vomitusheel by Heel is great - you can find a practitioner through the website www.biopathica.com. Otherwise try the Guild of Naturopathic Iridologists www.gni-international.org. I have had alot of success with reflux babies using this.

zephyrcat · 27/11/2004 10:01

Thank you for that - I'm quite keen to try some homeopathic things with him - i wasn't overly keen on the idea of giving him gaviscon. Last night he was sick when i took him up to bed (that's another thing hwe does - have his last bottle, go to sleep, when i take him up to bed later and change him, if i wake him up he's sick) and it was clear - like water. He's got clinic on tuesday so I'm going to have a word i think

MummyToSteven · 27/11/2004 10:11

have you thought of changing his formula at all - there is an SMA staydown formula and Omneo Comfort that are meant to be helpful for babies with sicky/temperamental tummy problems. you might want to discuss that at clinic next week. sympathies as DS was very sicky until 4 months ish and it does get very tedious having vast amounts of washing!!!!

zephyrcat · 27/11/2004 10:46

ridiculous amounts of washing!! And i can guarantee that as soon as i put something clean over his head - he'll puke!! Half the time I think he's just doing it to wind me up!!
I didn't realise SMA did a staydown formula? I will definately ask the HV/doc about that on tuesday. I did wonder at one point if it might be SMA that was disagreeing with him but then I would imagine that it would make him severely sick if that was the case?
