I am jumping ahead a little here but my dd 4yo has been for blood tests today for diabetes and coeliacs. I have no idea how we would cope with family life with a diabetic child and am getting very worried. i know the chances are it is not diabetes but wondered if anyone has any nice positive stories to help set my mind at ease.

My cousin was diagnosed with diabetes very young, I think aged 3 or younger. I think it was quite tough to start with, but once the family got into a routine with insulin injections and meals it was ok. He's now a fine, strong 34 yr old, so it can work out ok.

I hope you get good news for your dd.

Generally, there would be a history of Type 1 or 2 diabetes in the family.

My dsd was diagnosed as Type 1 at 5. She's now 17 and she's fine. She eats like a horse, mind you, but manages it very well. These days, there is no need to stringently avoid anything with sugar in it .. but exercise will always be very important.

Any way, fingers crossed for your dd
If it is diabetes, I assure you that it is extremely manageable these days. She won't miss out on a thing.

I was diagnosed with Type 1 at 9. Have led a normal, happy and healthy life! Tbh i imagine a coeliac bein harder work diet wise. Diabetes honestly wouldn't be the end of the world, not nowadays it's much more common.

What symptoms does she have?

cherryredretrochick · 17/01/2008 21:14

Thanks, Basic symptons,
exhaustion, irratability, aneamia, ups and down, what seems like deppresion (in a bloody 4yo) slepps constantly, bloated stomach, diarehha (soory about spelling), tantrums constantly, poor diet, no appetite. The lsit goes on and is that vague. So pleased that doc didn't look at me like a nutter and took things v seriously. (but also a bit worried.

Unless she's very thirsty and weeing a lot i'd say it's unlikely she has diabetes. Those symptoms sound more like ceoliac to me. Very glad your doc is taking you seriously, you're very lucky there
