Sore tongue

Now, I don't think I've scalded or burnt it with something hot (though I am the person who bit her own finger so hard she drew blood while eating a sandwich, so anything's possible), but my tongue has been sore for the past day or so. Not red, no obvious white thrush patches, and throat also a bit sore. Any diagnoses, tips?

Too much talking?

are you a bit anaemic? Have a look at the inside of your lower eye lids and your gums - are they nice and pink/red or pale looking? Any other symptoms e.g. fever, tiredness, nausea, mouth ulcers etc etc?

Habbibu · 17/01/2008 19:31

Ooh - you minx! . No, my tongue has been well hardened through years of talking too much. Probably has the equivalent of calluses...

Have just had a look. Eyelids maybe a little pale, but I usually have a ridiculously high blood count for iron, so I'd be very surprised. Have had mouth ulcers lately, for the first time in ages. Are they a sign of anaemia?

is your tongue swollen or does it feel normal size?

May the spanish inquisition continue.....!

Any changes to your digestive system? Constipation / diarrhoea etc?

Any pins and needles?

Habbibu · 17/01/2008 20:28

Feels normal size. And it can't be folate deficiency - have been on high-dose FA for some time.

No, digesting pretty well. No pins and needles.

Liking the thorough consultation, Pipe!

I often have a sore tongue. It's usually caused by my eating things like tomatoes, walnuts. Tabouleh does it, weirdly.

Or I get it when I'm stressed. I give it a bit of a chewing in my sleep. The edges look quite gnawed sometimes.

Could it be either of those causes?

Habbibu · 17/01/2008 20:50

No - it's the middle - does feel like I've burnt it, but I really don't think I have. Haven't eaten anything out of the ordinary, and don't usually have any food intolerances, apart from aubergines

It could be vit B12 deficiency or are you taking any meds at the moment? It could also be nothing and go away!!

Habbibu · 17/01/2008 22:22

No meds apart from the folic acid. Diet not bad. Suspect the latter, but many thanks for taking the time. Think it feels a bit better - possibly placebo effect of having someone pay kind attention to my malady!
