Awful awful chafing - tips for easing?

I did a race today and despite smothering myself in vaseline I have chafed badly. I'll be investing in liquid talc for next time I run but it's so so sore right now. I was crying in the shower! What might ease it now? More vaseline? Everytime I move it hurts.

Where is it sore?

Coughee · 16/07/2022 21:12

Bra line and the top of my arms underneath - it's the arms that are really sore

Lanacane - anti chafing gel! Apply liberally and top up when needed. A game changer. You can grab it from boots / pharmacy's 😊

Metanium nappy rash cream works absolute wonders.

QuestionableMouse · 16/07/2022 21:15

Order some of these and put them on. www.amazon.co.uk/Hydrocolloid-Dressing-10cm-x5/dp/B00C78M25E/ref=asc_df_B00C78M25E/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309940318982&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1754210676105807232&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9046823&hvtargid=pla-562225679934&psc=1

Doesn't have to be those exact ones (and your local pharmacy may have some too!) they're essentially a big blister plaster and will protect and soothe the wounds.

Until them, clean cool cloths to reduce inflammation and take some ibuprofen if you can. Savlon or similar will help too.

That's not going to heal it through unfortunately!

Coughee · 16/07/2022 21:17

Thank you, thank you. I will buy all those things and take some ibuprofen now. I think I may have some savlon too

OP I feel your pain. My left underarm used to bleed when I raced in hot weather. I found a technical top with tighter short sleeves helped. Loose cotton tees were the worst by far.

yonce · 16/07/2022 21:18

Ah my bad - apologies - my suggestion was to prevent next time!

Coughee · 16/07/2022 21:19

Oh and I do definitely need to buy some anti chafing stuff for next time. I think I'm sweatier as I get older and that makes it worse. Vaseline used to be all I needed.

Get some double base gel on it.

whataloadabullocks · 16/07/2022 21:22

Remove bra, if you have a silk scarf, pop that underneath your bosom, and clamp it underneath your pits. Silk is very lightweight, very absorbent, doesn't rub and will stop further 'sweat rub'.
If you are any good with a needle and thread it's very easy to make an anti chaff silk 'bodice'. Basically you turn the silk scarf in to a 'tube', you can add a bit of elastic at the back for a bit of stretch.
Bamboo fabric also works, (yoga bamboo bands can work) but isn't as lightweight as silk.

Chafing is a bitch, isn't it? ☹️ I get it between my thighs and it can be so sore! A practice nurse advised me to treat it like a burn and it really helped!

FawnFrenchieMum · 16/07/2022 21:24

I feel like savlon and double base will add moisture. The metanium dries to open wound so it doesn’t sting as much.

7catsisnotenough · 16/07/2022 21:26

Bepanthen, it's a miracle in a tube! First recommended to me for my tattoo, it's now my "go to" and (most importantly!) grandma's magic cream for lumps, bumps and cuts 👍🏼 Soothing, healing, but not greasy/over heavy like Sudocrem

Coughee · 16/07/2022 21:35

Thanks again. I've found a mepilex xt dressing in my first aid box. Possibly left over from a burn I had. I'm debating using it but a bit scared as it has to go sticky side down and I don't fancy having to peel it off!

Body glide is great

shazshaz · 16/07/2022 21:59

I think I'd be inclined to use panty liners or a thin sanitary pad stuck down with surgical tape until you can by some non stick dressings tomorrow.

Coughee · 16/07/2022 21:59

Chafing is indeed a bitch. It was a hot day and a tough course and I prepared so well and would be able to say I was completely unscathed were it not for this! I have heard good things about body glide. The price always put me off but it'll be worth every penny if it prevents this.

Bodyglide is amazing and a stick lasts for ages.

colouringindoors · 16/07/2022 22:06

Lanisoh nipple cream.

Designed for sore nips but would be good for this too. Calms, seals and enables the body to heal. As someone who's breastfed 2 babies for a year each I can't recommend it highly enough!
