So painful after hysterectomy

I had an abdominal hysterectomy 2 days ago. They discharged me today. I'm still in loads of pain! They gave me Codeine but it's not really helping.

I don't remember my C-sections being this painful.

I think the issue might be that I haven't properly pooed yet, aside from one fart and a teeny tiny poo nugget. I probably still have some trapped wind too? I've had Movicol (nothing) and Lactulose (nope). The one thing that did get the fart and the buffet out was a glycerin suppository - should I send DH out to buy some?

I just can't get comfortable. Getting in and out of bed is so hard. The car journey back was painful.

I wish they'd let me stay in hospital longer, to be honest.

Great news OP!! If you have Facebook you should join Hysterectomy Sisters UK. Lots of ladies on here that have had or are going to have a hysterectomy. There's lots of advice and often celebratory poo posts!

DoingJustFine · 15/07/2022 14:23

@Winewednesday Thank you! I'll check that out now!

I've had another poo since I posted. It's literally all go here.

How is your pain? I found I had no pain after I went and was able to stop my pain killers.

Onthegrid · 15/07/2022 15:48

Did you get the advice to hold a pillow or similar to your wound area (assuming it wasn't a laparoscopic op when coughing and pooing?
I also used it in the car

DoingJustFine · 15/07/2022 16:01

@Winewednesday

Thanks for asking! The pain is SO much better after 💩 It still stings when I get in or out of bed. I'm wondering if the dressing is pulling on the skin maybe?

I'm managing on paracetamol and ibuprofen though - the first day, in hospital, only morphine worked.

@Onthegrid Yes! I got a little cushion and it was great on the journey home. I'll try it on the loo too.

I'm not sure how much or little I should be doing? My operation was Tuesday afternoon. I've had a shower and pottered about but I'm bloody tired -- is it ok to mainly loll about watching TV today, do you think? I'm definitely up every hour (usually to do a pee) but I haven't gone out for a walk.

I'm scared to do too much but also too little!

The tummy will still be sore, I used a pillow to support my tummy when I got in and out of bed and in the car. Your doing absouloutley fine. I lulled about watching TV for a good few weeks. I think it was a week after the op that I walked for 5 minutes. I then slept not long after and I think that's totally normal. I tried to do as little as possible and didn't lift anything or hoover etc for maybe 5 or 6 weeks at the earliest. Walking was the only thing I made myself get up and do, although not to far. Start with 5 minutes then increase each week if you feel able too.

@DoingJustFine so pleased to read the updates!!! I hope DH and DS's haven't resorted to firing cuppa soups at you just yet and are taking care of you. I've attached the page from the physio leaflet I got from the hospital as part of my recovery plan. It wasn't a hysterectomy I had but I would imagine it's similar advice ❤️ TAKE IT EASY!!!!

I also found the Tesco fruit ice lollies a nice treat too so I didn't sicken myself with water to keep hydrated.

Try a walk around the garden and gradually build up (over a few days) to walking to the end of the street. I needed Dh to hold onto the first time I walked up the street.
