Positive Babinski and Hoffman’s sign

Has anyone any experience of a positive reaction from either a Babinski or Hoffman’s reflex test? If so do you mind sharing if you received a diagnosis?

I have shown strong responses as positive in both but only on the left side. Along with left arms weakness, occasional lack of hand coordination and recently felt extremely odd sensations after using a hedge trimmer triggered by the vibrations in my left arm. I have been referred for an mri and nerve conductivity tests but the doctor and physio I am under have suggested this may be a few months.
I stupidly made the mistake of googling and now terrified of the possible outcomes as the tests, especially with unilateral results, seems to indicated a upper motor neurone disorder or lesions stemming from the central nervous system.

thanks in advance.

I had a positive Babinski sign on the right. I have Dystonia, which is worst on the right side of my body, particularly my arm and leg. It can be challenging to live with but I have learned to live with it. I have a career as a teacher and a full life - I just have to pace myself to avoid getting too fatigued.

They are tests of upper motor neuron function (brain and spinal cord). I would recommend you get your gp to refer you to a neurologist as I would want a brain and whole spine mri. I'm not sure a gp or physio could order a brain mri. Good luck

Thank you.
It was the physio who has requested the mri and he said they would only look at the neck and upper spine first. If that shows nothing they would decide what to do from there. Tbh I’m absolutely petrified of what they might find.
im sue to see my gp again in a couple of weeks for a catch up on blood test results and ecg results due to fatigue and fast heart rate. I’m starting to thing I should try to see her sooner but I don’t want to come across as a hypochondriac. I haven’t been to the doctor for years and this has all been so fast getting into everyone at once (since I first went Monday) that it’s scaring me.

That's a good start and not wrong to request. However will only look at part of the picture and nothing showing on the neck MRI wouldn't rule out other possible causes. A referral to neurology would definitely be appropriate as they will know which other investigations may be appropriate, as well as looking at any tests you already had. This is what the GP is for so they will not mind seeing you again at all. Waiting lists are long at the moment so the sooner you are on the better. You can always cancel if things improve.

I have made an appointment to see my go tomorrow to request referral to a neurologist now. Hopefully I won’t have to wait too long.

Update:
I have a very low b12 level and am also anaemic.
The doctor has started me in loading doses of b12 every other day for two weeks. She has said it's likely to be malabsorption and after the initial doses will require shots every month for life.

My referral to neurology was turned down in light of these results but I am worried about the damage already done to my nerves. Hopefully the MRI will shed some light on whether I need to worry.

Sounds like you have a plan. Hopefully things are improving for you
