blood on 14 mth old dd's sheets this morning - bit tongue or something more sinister?

When I went in to get 14 month old dd this morning there was blood on her sheets - not bright red but pinkish - I guess cause it was mixed with saliva - and not absolutely loads but a couple of patches. Happened to have a dentist's appt this morning so got him to look in her mouth. He said he could see a white patch where it looked as though she might have bitten or scratched herself on her inside cheek.

The only complication is that she's been ill for the past 4-5 days - yesterday was the first day she was better - with fever mainly. Saw GP on Monday and he looked at her throat and said just a viral upper respiratory infection. She hasn't been coughing any more than usual (she seems to have a permanent cold). The biting cheek explanation seems to make sense, but do you think I need to get her checked out? Bad mum doesn't want to spend any more time waiting around for docs than she has to (we need a shamefaced emoticon). Any thoughts?

i'd just keep an eye on it and if it happens again take her to the doc/nurse

does she have any scabs on her arm/leg which could have come off and caused a slight bleed? this sometimes happens with my dc as they are quite 'active' in their sleep

has she had ear-ache at all with her cold? It is quite common for ear-drum to perforate to release the pressure at this age - and not that big a deal. That can look like a yellowy-pink liquid. Would imagine you would still be able to see a bit of gunk around ear if this had happened though.

Personally I wouldn't worry about it unless there's a repeat. (but then mine do have to be really quite ill to get to visit doc).

I took ds to doc when he was about 10months because he hadn't eaten properly for days because of a bug. Doc took one look at the rolls of fat on him, grinned at me and said "hmmmm, yes, I can see he's wasting away". Have become even less quick to visit doc since then....

Thanks both. I have decided to keep an eye on it and take her in if it happens again. I don't think her ears are infected - GP looked in them on monday and not red or anything. I'll have a look for scabs.

I'm becoming a bit more lazy about going to the docs as they always tell me anything she has wrong is a virus!

could it have been a small nosebleed? When DS had a bad cold before christmas he woke up a few times with a tiny bit of crusty blood on the outside of his nose and about a 50p size patch on his sheet.

Could be where she cut a tooth, my ds2 has this if he cuts a tooth a night

Thanks for ideas. No blood on her nose at all and it looked diluted/pinky so am guessing it was mixed with saliva. The dentist looked in her mouth today and said he couldn't see any teeth erupting, which is wierd as she's been drooling for britain for the last week - not sure what else would cause that. I guess we'll just see what happens now...
