Please tell me this was a piece of undigested tagliatelle in DS's nappy...

He's never had tagliatelle, but what else could it be, right? About 4 inches long, in the poo, flat...

BibiThree · 17/01/2008 13:28

sounds like tape worm ... google them?

marina · 17/01/2008 13:29

How old is he and erm, is there any chance something could have fallen down his neckline/waistband and into his nappy, and the got kind of mashed into the poo

What has he had over the last few days?

TsarChasm · 17/01/2008 13:34

Has he chewed the ribbon off something? A toy?

Do not go googling tapeworms. See the doctor if you're worried. Googling stuff like that never seems to help I've found.

cyanarasamba · 17/01/2008 13:39

He is 11 months. He is in cloth nappies, waterproof wrap and a vest so nothing would get into his nappy accidentally I don't think.

Yesterday he had weetabix, beef stew with rice, mango, tuna pasta with a yogurt. Day before Reddy Brek, chicken casserole, lentil bake and a teacake I think.

Looks horribly like some of the pics out there. I flushed the thing as I had to rush out, shouldn't have done that. Liking the rubber band/something swallowed off the floor theory.

Should I head for the docs?

I was going to suggest a rubber band -our cat has a thing about them so I've had a similar shocking discovery

TsarChasm · 17/01/2008 13:46

Yes, see the doctor to put your mind at rest. We could speculate for ages on here and you'll still be worried. I bet it's fine, but just for reassurance.

cyanarasamba · 17/01/2008 22:16

Thanks for your posts - saw the doctor this afternoon who suggested maybe roundworms (but it was flat it tell you!), will take a sample in tomorrow to be tested.

Anyway, bit of a recent development, this evening DH and I sit down to our lovely beef stew which I batch cooked on Tuesday and which DS ate yesterday.... I find I'm looking at lots and lots of wiggly sliced onions! Possible that one of these survived the mashing/ingestion process do you think?? I'd really like to think so.... Couldn't eat the stew though.

If he had a tapeworm, he would have a lot of discomfort. Have you noticed him complaining about tummy pain? Has he been eating more than usual and not putting on any weight?

Also, it would not be that large as he is only small.

marina · 18/01/2008 09:04

Not sure about sliced onion itself surviving being stewed but how about onion skin getting whisked into the pot too? Not that this ever happens in my house of course
(Low point being dd shrieking about a blue worm in her dinner recently for me to discover it was an overlooked rubber band off a bunch of thyme...still at least she didn't eat it)
Good luck with sorting it out - and as sugarmatches said, this sort of condition makes people very run down and low, I bet he has either only just picked this up, or it is indeed not a worm at all

TsarChasm · 18/01/2008 09:06

You poor thing It's awful to be worried about children.

I bet the onion is the culprit though! No wonder the food lost it's appeal.

Hope you get this sorted. You'll have a definitive answer this way. And sugar is right. He'd be in noticable discomfort if it was anything else I'm sure.

Try not to worry.

katyt1 · 18/01/2008 09:12

do you have cats??????

(similar event in middle of night when cat was sick - was worms, can't remember which type now - gross)

cory · 18/01/2008 09:20

The usual worms that kids pick up in this country are much smaller and thinner and you'd probably find them wriggling around in the poo. They don't affect your condition much except giving you an itchy bottom.
This sounds more like an onion to me.

ingles2 · 18/01/2008 09:27

I can't believe I'm going to tell you this because it still horrifies me now,...I had a tapeworm about a year ago. I travel abroad for work a lot and got it from incorrectly cooked pork. The chances of your son having a tapeworm are really really really tiny, my gp said he'd never seen a tapeworm and his partner said not for 15 years! I am absolutely positive it's not...and even if it was, I took a tablet, then it was gone. Please don't worry.

ingles2 · 18/01/2008 09:30

by the way, it's segmented not flat!
