DD got bitten yesterday, she’s taken antihistamines and today it looks like the pic below..it feels hot to touch and we’ve marked it to see if it spreads..what else can we do? Does it need a doctor tomorrow do you think?
thanks

Keep up with the antihistamines, and if it does spread further, see your GP or pharmacist. Also take paracetamol.

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 11/07/2022 20:47

a dispensing pharmacist can advise and prescribe anti biotics if needed.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 11/07/2022 20:49

If you have any Fucidin it relieves the itching and hotness of the area, a chemist should be able to advise. Keep it raised, keep it cool with a damp cloth. Walking on it will make the swelling worse. If it swells more or begins to weep call the doctor for advice.

Trainfromredhill · 11/07/2022 20:49

You need antiobiotics. Your GP can prescribe tomorrow, unless she develops a temp overnight - in which case go to a&E (a & e dr).

Beamur · 11/07/2022 20:52

Looks like cellulitis. Good call to circle with biro.
See a pharmacist tomorrow and maybe you might need to see a GP after that.
Cool pack and antihistamines for now. Looks sore and itchy! Poor thing.

WITL · 11/07/2022 20:53

I’d a and e with this.

RedCarsGoFaster · 11/07/2022 20:55

Keep marking it up - I put the time on each ring, it helps to monitor the speed of any spread. The GP liked that with DHs cellulitis, but my mum was a nurse and I think I must have seen her do it 😂

Do you have any antihistamine tablets, paracetamol and Anthisan cream for tonight? If it's really painful, keeps growing and you'll want to get her seen by a doctor in case it's infected.

Cool compress will feel good as well.

WITL · 11/07/2022 20:53

I’d a and e with this.

WTF? A&E for this. Bloody hell no wonder the NHS is a shambles if people attend a&e with this. Reminder it stands for accident and emergency.

Pharmacy tomorrow if it stays the same
OR
111 if it gets bigger who will signpost you to help if needed
OR
E-consult if your GP offers this including a photo. Can do this now and they should get back to you by end tomorrow.

Mummydoctor · 11/07/2022 21:01

Regular antihistamines
anti itch cream/steroid ointment
elevate and keep an eye on it
looks like an inflammatory reaction to the bite

enjoyingscience · 11/07/2022 21:01

I react like that to bites. Hydrocortisone cream if you have it, piriton syrup if you have it, cold compress.

pharmacy in the morning if no better.

Riverlee · 11/07/2022 21:03

I think I got bitten by the same bug as I had a similar reaction.

I was recommended hydrocortisone cream, which you can get from a local pharmacy. It did the trick.

However, if it starts to track down then a and e.

BanjoVio · 11/07/2022 21:03

Put a lemon in the fridge, chop it into wedges and rub/hold a nice cold lemon wedge onto it. A good itch reliever as the acid helps to neutralise the bite and the cold soothes it. A good remedy if she’s maxed out on antihistamines.

Trainfromredhill · 11/07/2022 21:03

@HavfrueDenizKisi this is a fairly standard a&e presentation. Admittedly a GP can deal with it if there is no fever, but we see this all the time.

25goingon95 · 11/07/2022 21:07

Thanks everyone! I’ve got hydrocortisone cream which we’ve applied and she’s taken antihistamines. It’s not itchy anymore just hot and swollen. Will monitor overnight and see what it’s like tomorrow! Going to put a cold compress on it now.

If I get bitten by a horsefly and don't get antihistamines onto it within 5 mins they end up looking like that.

Cold compress, more antihistamines (there are 2 types and you can take them together) and steroid cream.

If it keeps growing see a GP. Mine are also hot to the touch- it's a sign of inflammation not necessarily infection

25goingon95 · 11/07/2022 22:22

Oh that’s good to know that’s user0ne. Hoping it will have gone down a bit by morning

All my insect bites go like this-hot, swollen and massive. I just do portion and cool baths and they soon go.

newtb · 11/07/2022 22:35

Damping a rock salt deoderant (Pierre d'alun in French) and rubbing over the swollen bit gets rid of horsefly bite swelling.

MmeHennyPenny · 11/07/2022 22:35

My son had a large infected bite quite a few years ago. We saw the GP who sent him to the practice nurse.
She dressed it with an INADINE patch. We had to return every 3 days to have it redressed. The treatment worked well. So much so I just buy the patches myself now from Superdrug and dress his infected bites myself. He often gets them due to his outdoor lifestyle.
I don’t think such hands on treatment would be provided these days by either the GP or nurse. How times have changed!

HavfrueDenizKisi · 12/07/2022 06:08

@Trainfromredhill you may well see people presenting at a&e with this but should they? With no fever it's not an emergency is it? And that's my point. And all the a&e staff would treat this without mentioning to the patient/patient's parents that other pathways would have been more appropriate so people continue to present to a&e when they really shouldn't. Ergo huge waits at hospital and overworked staff.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/07/2022 06:19

My DH reacts like that when he is bitten by anything. His arms were covered in lumps like that after gardening on Saturday. He used antihistamine tablets and cream and the inflammation came down over night. They are now just dark red crusty spots. Your DD might be one of the unlucky people who react badly to insect bites.

Popsicle30 · 12/07/2022 06:21

Pharmacist / GP today. I had the same a couple of weeks ago. Went to Pharmacist first who looked at it and said I needed antibiotics from GP as it was spreading.

Mariposa80 · 12/07/2022 06:26

I react like that to some insect bites, antihistamines and hydrocortisone cream and just keep an eye.

I normally have to fend off people who insist I have cellulitis and must attend hospital for treatment immediately!

Lindy2 · 12/07/2022 06:28

If it's still red like that this morning I'd pop in to a chemist to see a pharmacist.

I have had several like this in the past. Hydrocortisone and antihistamines have sorted it although it takes a while to go ie a week or so.

The pharmacist checked the red area was itchy when I hot mine checked out - it was extremely itchy.

Generally cellulitis isn't itchy. It's red and hot and swollen. Bite reactions are itchy too.

If there's no itching now that would be a reason to get it checked.

DeathMetalMum · 12/07/2022 06:35

If redness has grown, then GP unless there's a prescribing pharmacist locally. Pharmacist will only advise what you have already done, (antihistamine and hydrocortisone/anthisan) unless they are able to prescribe antibiotics.

I seem to react badly to insect bites as I've gotten older and needed antibiotics twice recentl, both times the reaction was a day or two after the bite, and only one bit when I'd had several.
