Any nurses/ GPs? Urine dipstick reading...

Hi all,
Wondering if anyone is able to help. Grade 4 VUR Patient, slight temp being the only symptom. Took first pic yesterday late afternoon and was prescribed Cefalexin and took second pic today after 2 doses. Is it likely to improve already? Looks like Ketones slightly less but more blood in urine? Just wondering what's normal as don't want to be on an antibiotic resistant to the infection again!🤞🏼 thankful for anyone able to read!
Thanks😊

You can only tell what the bug is and isn’t resistant to by sending urine off to the lab.
have you done a specimen?

katem98 · 09/07/2022 09:01

@Weenurse Yes sent off but yesterday so no results as of yet, just wondering if it's normal to have more blood in todays urine if on correct antibiotics!

Wait for the results, try not to read too much into a dip stick

I'm not sure how reliable the dipsticks are really. I think they just give guidance. My mum had two dipsticks at the hospital and was told there was blood. She sent off two urine samples and both were negative. So I'd just try not to worry and wait for the specimen analysis to come back.

I'd heard this. I had a dipstick in a&e that showed traces of blood. I was about to start period (started next day) but GP insisting dipstick be redone. I'm worried same will happen again. Can I insist sample is sent off? Also heard they can give false negative for blood. if vitamin c in urine so that's a worry too.

Slightly off topic, but make sure that you don't have any bad side effects on the Cefalexin.

I was prescribed it a few months ago for a UTI and was having aural hallucinations - I could hear music that wasn't playing, conversations that weren't happening.. it was incredibly scary! Just be mindful.

Hope you feel better soon!

katem98 · 10/07/2022 10:29

@ObjectionSustained Thank you! It's my 1 year old daughter, not myself. She's been on it before and guess she can't tell me if she's hallucinating, hopefully not!

Oh I feel for you, esp if it's your young daughter and she can't express how she's feeling. I would also wait and continue with current antibiotics but maybe watch for symptoms and if things worsen def get another opinion. The blood per se doesn't suggest the abx aren't working but symptom progression might mean she needs something stronger or IV. You're probably the best judge to recognise these signs in your child but fingers crossed she gets better soon and the abx get on top of things.

katem98 · 10/07/2022 12:56

@harri2214 Thank you! The IV is what I'm worried about :( she's absolutely fine in herself it's just the temps. She's needed IV in the past for days but we go away on Friday... hoping she'll be ok. She has (luckily) a consultant review on Tue!

That's good timing for the Tuesday r/v. Are u going far? Do u have access to good health care whilst away. I'm not a urologist but hopefully the consultant can advise on precautions for the trip or u have access to good medical places if the abx do not completely solve issues b4 u go. U obviously have experience with VUR grade 4 and what happens when she gets unwell but hopefully she'll be totally better by friday. Fingers crossed for you all. x

@harri2214 Thank you again! We're only going down to North Devon for the weekend. There is a hospital there with a children's A&E from what I remember. Yes, unfortunately very used to the infections. She has been infection free since July last year after her Deflux procedure but here we are again! She's displayed different symptoms every time so never any clear markers unfortunately Sad

Oh really...Barnstaple area?
If it's Barnstaple, I used to work in the A&E there, it's nice but a small hosp.
IMO try to get the sample results tomorrow and esp seek advice if the fevers have not settled by tomorrow. Do u have a specialist nurse? Maybe they will change the abx or ask to see her tomorrow.
Hope u manage to have a nice weekend away.

katem98 · 10/07/2022 14:27

@harri2214 Ah really?! Yes, Barnstaple hospital was the one I was referring to. I went there years ago as a child, can't remember how big it was! We do have specialist nurses, she was just on the verge of being signed off, I'll give them a call tomorrow. Thank you for all of your help, really hope her temp settles!

My mum was dip sticked at hospital and the consultant instructed my gp to send off a sample. So I didn't have to get involved. The gp just dip at the surgery so it's quick and if it shows blood again, they'll probably request a sample from you.
However, if you're concerned that your period might influence the gp's decision, just don't tell them you're due to start! Or take the specimen tube and don't fill it and hand in until after you've finished.
Good luck and I hope you get the problem sorted.

Update:

Negative urine test today and negative dip at the GP. They lost the sample Hmm so have sent off another just to be safe. No temperature either since the calpol at 15:30pm yesterday!
