Which trainers would podiatrists recommend?

What kind of shoes do podiatrists recommend? And how about stylish orthopaedic shoes? Looking for several brands that don't inflict pain when walking a lot and standing a lot of the day. Thanks.

It depends on your feet, I have very flat feet and wear custom orthotics in any shoes I can fit them into (they don't work well with heels or open top shoes but I hardly wear those) and I wear a "support" trainer with them in as well. Most running shops will claim you only need a "neutral" shoe if you wear orthotics but they still don't give me enough support. If you've got wide feet or high arches then you might need something different.....
A lot of people recommend sketchers but I find them far too soft and squishy.

Its really important to get your exact size right. I'm 5.5 E fitting and I only get that size no bigger or smaller and expect to pay a bit more. If they are too big you'll get blisters and friction burns, too small and obviously pain. You should never buy long to compensate for wide as it will really affect your gait and you should get special shoes that accommodate bunions if you have those.
I always get these, classed as walking boots but they have trainer type ones.
Another thing you can do which i do to show my patients how badly fitting their shoes are is have them sit down put their feet on cardboard and draw round them.

Then cut them out and put them in your shoes or shoes you want to buy.
You can then see right away if your shoes are too long, not wide enough or whatever.
The cardboard should never go up the side of the shoe, it should lie flat in the shoe, if it doesn't get a wider fit.
I like walking shoes rather than trainers because they have a fairly rigid rocker bottom curved sole which helps you walk much easier and does not impact on your foot too much like flat shoes do.

I've recently seen a podiatrist for an arthritic bone in my foot, and he went mad at the Skechers I was wearing to the appointment Blush

I'm now the proud owner of some Joya trainers that are like walking on clouds - they also recommended Strive footwear, Vionic and YDA UK.

I wear Adidas Court or Superstars with my custom orthotics. I have extremely wide, flat feet.

Skechers and Vionic are the two I'm looking at for that extra support

I am getting more confident about Vionic. I've tried on that and Skechers, like them both. What did your podiatrist say about Skechers? they're supposed to be the best for arch support along with Strive and Vionic.

Mine recommends Hokas, and while they do look like clown shoes, they are blissfully comfortable.

Birkenstock are a good bet if you want support.

Just bumping -don't suppose there are any recommendations for slightly less expensive shoes/trainers/walking shoes .I can't spend more than a £100 ...

emmathedilemma · 14/07/2022 12:07

@peridito try websites such as Start Fitness, Sports Shoes or any good running shop (Run4It, runners needs, up & running, Run & Become) for the sales or end of lines. But you often only score on the sales if you have feet at the larger or smaller end of the size range. I take a 7 in trainers and they're always sold out before they reduce them!

thanks @emmathedilemma ,I'll have a look .
