In person appointment after biopsy results for breast

Hi, my mum had an routine ultrasound which showed abnormality and today had a repeat mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy. The consultant gave no indication of what he thought it was but she was given an appointment to come back in next Wednesday for her results.

I've been reading through a few posts on here and it seems like if the consultant thinks the lump is benign they will say and if they think it's cancerous they will say, but my mum was left with the idea that they don't know. Has anyone else had this experience and it still turn out to be benign? She was told the lump was 8mm and that her lymph nodes were clear on the ultrasound so would that be an indication of cancer? Also is it normal to be given an in person appointment unless they think it's most likely cancer? She doesn't have good family history so we're all very worried.

Thank you

I had a mammogram, scan and biopsy and was given no indication at all as to what the staff thought. You are always given an appointment to get the result. Don’t try to second guess the doctors and the scan. I know a week can seem a long time when you are waiting for results. I hope everything goes well.

In person appt for results is normal where 9 am regardless of whether its cancer or not ....did they say what number birads it was? ....sometimes they don't know one way or the other...sometimes they are very certain one way or the other....hope the wait goes quick

Thank you for your response @mdh2020 I suffer from health anxiety so I'm quite bad with what ifs and waiting in the unknown etc. Can I ask if you don't mind what your results were?

@kitcat15 thank you I'm glad to hear in person appointments are normal. This is the NHS so is that the same for you? They didn't mention any numbers.

I have a friend who is a radiographer. She says she can be almost certain on what she sees on a scan but it's only the Dr who gives results so I hope that brings some comfort. I "think" it seems pretty standard

I'm Afraid there is nothing to do except wait for the results. It's the worst part of the whole thing, just waiting. Best of luck for the results x

I've had breast cancer. I was pretty certain that it was going to be positive after radiographer said "your nodes are clear so that's good" but neither he nor the consultant would be drawn on anything else until the biopsy results were back. I had an appointment a week later where the results were confirmed. I'd sort of got my head round it so it wasn't a shock. Please try not to stress, it is far less likely to be cancer. However, even if it is, treatment is amazing these days and outcomes excellent. I wish your Mum lots of luck Flowers

@TheFormidableMrsC thank you and I'm glad you're well now! Yeah that's what I mean, him mentioning her nodes being clear just seems like they expect it to be that which is very scary whilst waiting but at the same time knowing her nodes are clear is comforting in case of worse case scenario. After they told you that, did your nodes continue to be clear on further investigation? My sister had biopsies last year and the Dr told her there and then that they expected it to be a cyst, didn't give her an appointment and told her over the phone that it was indeed a cyst. In my mum's sisters experience she was told they were suspicious of her lump and that they expected it to be cancer and gave her an idea of what the treatment would be and confirmed in her follow up appointment that it was. So with my mum it didn't go either of those ways but seems to be a lot more serious than my sisters appointment.

Yes NHS cancer hospital in NW England..... at my callback appt after the ultrasound I was told birads 4 which is 'suspicious' ... I am a nurse though so maybe asked a few different questions to most .... but I think most cancer hospitals use a birads score , before the biopsies come back with a more definitive result.

kitcat15 · 06/07/2022 00:08

Sorry meant to say my nodes were clear on ultrasound but had 1 positive node after surgery.... but 2 years down the line I'm doing good....so whatever your mums results....there is good treatment out there ....this waiting is the worst time...take care

Hi, during surgery they use a dye to trace to your sentinel node and mine was clear thankfully. I should add that even having cells in your nodes is absolutely successfully treatable in any event. I think it all depends on each clinic. Mine is a dedicated breast clinic and they won't speculate until the full results of a biopsy comes though. I have found that they will say if they believe it's a cyst or fibroadenoma. I realise you are very stressed, the waiting is difficult but it really is best to try not to do that. Ultimately it makes no difference to the outcome. I really hope all is well for Mum!
