Is there anything that can be done for an injured coccyx?

I fell off a swing at the park with DD2 on Friday, she was sat on my lap and I slipped off the swing and landed on my bum.... luckily I took the brunt of the fall and she's fine but since then my coccyx/tailbone has been really sore and gotten progressively worse so now sitting down is painful.

However, having had a look online it looks like even if it was fractured or broken there's nothing you can do to treat it other than let it heal in its own time. I'm reluctant to waste NHS time if it's once of those things they can't treat and I just have to wait it out but is there anything I can do in the meantime? I've been having hot baths but nothing is really helping at the moment.

I'd ice it and take ibuprofen to reduce the swelling.
I broke my sacrum falling off a horse and had cortisone injections and physio, which helped. This was private though.

See an osteopath or women's health physio, they work magic

I fractured my coxxyx a few years back and it was the worse pain ever, unfortunately there is not much can be done, I spent 6 months sitting on a piles cushion!

Not in DHs experience no, except time...

He broke his snowboarding some years ago. There was no treatment path. It was painful on and off for a few years - he used ice packs and ibuprofen gel + some physio exercises he found online. I think he also tried some kind of ultrasonic massager - but I think that was a gimmick. It was some years before he could sit for prolonged periods without discomfort. It did ease though and he seems ok now.

Sorry that wasn't much reassurance.

I injured by coccyx giving birth. For me time was the only healer and I tried osteopathy, chiropracty, physiotherapy and a cortisone injection.

If the pain continues get yourself a specialised memory foam cushion to sit on.
My sympathies - it's a sod of an injury.

I fell over ice-skating in 2019 and injured mine. It only stopped hurting the last 6 months or so!

LaFloristaCalista · 05/07/2022 16:30

I bruised mine on a water slide about 6 weeks ago and it's only just starting to be a bit less painful

Try a Pt or osteopath who specializes in spine health, but its v difficult to treat

Been there!

Pain relief for pain management and if you're struggling to manage pain with otc painkillers, don't hesitate to see your gp.

Physiotherapy is the single best thing you can do. See a physio who specialises in women's pelvic problems: a pp above said hers broke in childbirth, this isn't unusual. A physio who specialises in these matters can work wonders.

Pilates will also help.

I broke mine 5 years ago...I don't expect to ever be entirely free of discomfort but seeing a physio has been the best thing I've ever done.

A rolled up towel under the tops of your thighs can help when seated, I was advised to do it when driving too and it did help.
You can also roll up a towel and shape into a horseshoe shape, sitting with the open end under your bottom and your legs along each length. This also helps.

Special coccyx cushions are also available but I've never bothered.

I struggle to sit on hard surfaces for any length of time now but other than that it doesnt cause me problems. It does get better!

Took me 18 months of agony to heal. I'm still very, very careful years later.

My boss's wife had her coccyx removed surgically in an attempt to try and get rid of the pain quickly but it didn't work; it took her a long, long time to heal and she said her advice is even if they offer the surgery, don't accept! Just take the brufen, get the cushions with the U shape cut out at the back (brilliant - much better than anything else), and see if physio can help. (didn't help me but you never know...)

An xray first yo see exactly what is wrong would be sensible

ZeroFuchsGiven · 05/07/2022 17:00

The one thing I will always remember most about my fractured coccyx is having to do a 3 hour car journey to my Dads funeral then sitting on cold hard pews for over an hour, People probably thought I was a lot more emotional than I was as it was constant tears streaming down my face from the pain!
