It's about nipping it in the bud asap, and for me that's aspirin, paracetamol and caffeine the second it starts. If I don't take these within the first half hour I suffer so badly all day. Hopefully you'll get more replies regarding other medication ideas.

TheVolturi · 03/07/2022 20:31

Ibuprofen and cocodamol for a bad one. With a coffee.

Misstes · 03/07/2022 20:34

Aspirin dissolved in full sugar cola. Usually you need to do it when you feel it coming on, but it might still work.

Handsnotwands · 03/07/2022 20:35

Sumatriptan.

BellaBella38 · 03/07/2022 20:36

Ice pack at the base of my skull.

Mol1628 · 03/07/2022 20:39

Once one is started I have to ride it out. Dark room no movement no screens.
I do the same as PP. Soon as I feel it coming on paracetamol ibuprofen caffeine and a cool and soothe head strip.

Mischance · 03/07/2022 20:39

To be honest I do not even try to make it better - I take a sleeping tablet (whatever time of day), go to bed, go to sleep and wake up with it gone. Nothing else has ever done the trick, so I just choose to sleep through it.

AnnaMagnani · 03/07/2022 20:40

Sometimes you just have to wait it out. Pack of frozen peas will help the misery.

Triptans work but beware overuse headache - can also happen with paracetamol and codeine.

Never take any analgesic for migraine more than twice a week or 6 times a month or you can start triggering more migraines. Been there it's miserable. The only answer is cold turkey which is horrific.

userxx · 03/07/2022 20:49

Ive never managed to stop them in their tracks, I just accept 3 days of misery will follow.

SeaToSki · 03/07/2022 20:55

There are drugs you can take every day as a preventative (gabapentin is one) and then there are rescue drugs you can take if one breaks through (sumatriptan is excellent)

If you get them often, you should get a medical assessment and try and manage them medically

You can also try and work out what triggers them and approach it from that angle. For me it is flashing/flickering lights, for my ds it is work stress and social stress, for my other ds we have no clue whatsoever. My sister’s are triggered by her period (3 days before) and my good friend is triggered by alcohol or caffeine

Reasonistreason · 03/07/2022 21:54

Mischance, what sleeping tablet do you take? I can never get to sleep with a migraine and have often wished I could just sleep and wake up with it gone.
Have just had my first CGRP injection today so hoping that leads to an improvement in frequency of migraines,

Valhalla17 · 03/07/2022 22:13

I think my record was 11 days, so you really have my sympathies OP. What "usually" helps is Syndol (with the muscle relaxant, not the ribbish light blue variety), a 20min epsom salt bath, followed by dark room with cool flannel and diffuser if im ok with smells (eucalyptus or lavender). Oh and something cool and fizzy to sip!

Valhalla17 · 03/07/2022 22:14

Rubbish*

Mischance · 03/07/2022 22:54

Lorezepam

NoiceToight · 03/07/2022 23:04

I used to get migrains about every two weeks and they were completely debilitating. After a long time, I worked out gluten or wheat and alcohol were major triggers, so I avoid that at all costs now and the frequency of my migraines has massively reduced to maybe one every 2-3 months.
Triptans didn't do much for me - they gave me horrible side effects too.
If I get a migraine, I take some good quality full spectrum CBD - about 60mg. CBD makes my migraines last from 2-10 hours, as opposed to 2-3 days, which is how long they last if I don't take CBD. I also take cocodamol, and when the nausea is really really bad and I have to work and can't just lie still, I'll take metaclopromide which helps.
Obviously lying still in the dark with no screens helps too, and is often all I feel like doing, but with all the above, I don't have to do this.

Daith piercings have changed my life. I had migraines and cluster headaches but since I had these piercings I have never had another. Ensure that the piercing is a medical piercing and not a high street piercer.

Where do you go for this then?

BobbyBleu · 04/07/2022 09:14

Since I had covid my migraines have increased massively. It's becoming quite debilitating at times.
I saw some great advice online that helped me and it was as others have suggested on here, notice the early warning signs and take two aspirin and one of those little cans of full sugar coke. I keep one in my handbag now and always have one in my fridge/car.
This has worked much better than I thought at stopping it in its tracks.
I also have migraleve pink tablets ready for if it continues and I get the visual aura. I think these tablets are excellent but are strong so you still feel a bit spaced out.
Another good tip I saw was to really try and notice your triggers- one for me is bright lights, I'm wearing my sunglasses far more than ever now. Sometimes the lights in supermarkets seem to bright and I wouldn't care I'd just wear my sunglasses if I need to.
Keep a diary of what you've eaten and done on the days you get a migraine and see if you can work out your triggers.

You have my sympathy, migraines are awful. Far more than just a headache.

BobbyBleu · 04/07/2022 09:17

I should add (as others have said) sometimes they are just unavoidable and I have to take strong painkillers and lie in a dark room and hope to sleep. It's awful as you know you've got 2-3 days of feeling rubbish but staying awake in the daylight just makes it worse!

awfulmigraine · 04/07/2022 10:55

I've noticed the last 2 months ive had one each month so might be my periods are due, I'll have to keep an eye but I've still got it today 3rd day running, I've taken co-codamol 30/500mg not shifted one bit

I am currently stuck in the hell (migraine, diarrhoea, sickness, runny nose/eyes, full body pain, no sleep, miserable) that is coming off the 30-500 co codamol after years of taking 8 a day. Taking them for migraines had contributed to the Hell. All taking codeine does for the migraine is turn down the pain, not treat the cause. Is yours prescribed for migraine?

If I get stuck in a state like you are it's normally due to one or more of the below:

An infection (always get a wicked headache);

Neck spasm, a good massage helps loads;

Have used too many painkillers as they are triggering the pain

If you can take NSAIDs (I can't) take some with paracetamol, full fat coke, triptans if prescribed and a large glass of water and lie still in a dark room with no screens.

Honestly, Google medication overuse headache

Good luck
