Intense itch, scratch then white stuff comes out

I get very localised itches in my skin that is a very intense itch like a sort of sharp sensation.
When I scratch the area I have to keep scratching until the itch stops and as I scratch, white bits come out. The bits are usually thin and a max of 1mm long. From descriptions of dermodex, they are too small to be seen. Could they be clusters of mites or something else entirely?
I mentioned this to a nurse and she said she never heard of dermodex, but it definitely a condition.
Its really bad today so I will make an appointment with my doctor which will take a while.
Any ideas?!?

Do you get any bleeding or scarring after you’ve scratched the white things out?

aletterfromseneca · 02/07/2022 22:51

I think the best think you can do is take the bits to a GPs and ask for testing. The internet is not a good place for medical advice.

BergamotandLime · 02/07/2022 22:58

Sounds like keratosis pilaris to me.

Oceanus · 02/07/2022 23:20

Go on, give us a picture you know we want one 😘🙃

Oceanus · 02/07/2022 23:23

Sorry, just saw the picture upthread, can you get a closer one or with a lamp above?
Unless you want to do a video of it coming out of your skin...? 😵

LoonyIdea · 02/07/2022 23:25

I’m voting keratosis pilaris too.

Wauden · 02/07/2022 23:33

@BananaBender. The skin looks normal afterwards apart from looking scratched.
I probably need a doctor's referral to a dermatologist.

@LoonyIdea However, the skin is not bumpy.

The vast majority of us have dermodex mites. They're kinda cute, badly evolved. Live in our pores during the day, come out at night to have sex on our faces and explode eventually because they can't poo. There are thoughts that they are beneficial to us re clearing our pores of crap. Harmless and you definitely definitely can't see them with your eyes.

Makes me feel a bit better about my life, that.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/07/2022 00:38

Fungal?

Wakemeupinsummer · 03/07/2022 07:14

Op have a look at Morgellons

DockOTheBay · 03/07/2022 07:25

My first thought was also Morgellans

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/07/2022 07:27

Talk to your doctor and really listen to what they say. You should not be attacking your skin with your nails - even a mild, trivial itch caused by dry skin etc can become severe if you start an itch-scratch cycle. Also googling can easily create an obsession with demodex, parasites etc, which increases the compulsion to itch and examine your skin.

RogersOrganismicProcess · 03/07/2022 07:30

The fact it happens in the evening/night would suggest fungal to me. Fungus likes dark and moist conditions.

This is so gross, but @gamerchick I love that you knew that!

Oblomov22 · 03/07/2022 07:47

I think you need to take more photos when it happens again, also collect them up, and ask GP to send off the skin/mites/whatever it is, send it off for examination?

@WonderingWanda. The stuff has a sort of waxy texture, and I can roll it about.

The itching is intense and after the have had a good old scratch and the stuff comes out, it often stops although sometimes comes back in a spot on my back where it is very hard to reach.

If I don't get the white stuff out it keeps itching until I do.

Yeah, pretty sure you're describing a fungal infection. Get some Daktarin while you wait for an appt with the GP,or see a pharmacist.

Meanwhile, I will have a tea tree oil bath and hair wash today.

DiscoBadgers · 03/07/2022 10:08

It’s probably just improperly absorbed Moisturizer or body lotion residue

Wauden · 03/07/2022 21:16

@DiscoBadgers Interesting, but I don't use those.

It has been better today, goodness knows why. Yesterday really was intolerable.

OP could it just be dead skin you are rubbing away? Could you try an exfoliating mitt? They're very good.
And ignore the posts about morgellons.

To be fair, the thread title wasn't exactly breakfast friendly.

Wauden · 05/07/2022 23:44

@CrocodilesCry. I wondered about that but the stuff is waxy and comes from deep inside the skin.

Mysterious.
