Thoughts on nytol?

Flowers217 · 02/07/2022 16:18

I am not sleeping great at the moment (mainly due to noisy neighbours upstairs waking me up early in the morning which is making me anxious about sleeping).

thinking about trying nytol? I know it’s not the solution to noisy neighbours but wondering if it’ll just help me for one or two nights every so often to get a really good deep sleep?

does it work?

I find the herbal one really helpful

Chickoletta · 02/07/2022 16:22

It does work, yes. I’m a musician and find it really hard to sleep after concerts (brain too active and adrenaline). I have a box of Nytol in the cupboard and will take one (rather than the actual dose of two) and find it works wonders. Can always then take a second one if needed. I do make sure that I only do this occasionally though as I would worry about becoming reliant.

QuandaleDingle · 02/07/2022 16:22

I sleep quite badly, especially when it's warm. and the pharmacist recommended this, not the herbal one the standard one. Not tried it yet though as kinda want to wait til I'm absolutely desperate

Reallyreallyborednow · 02/07/2022 16:28

If it’s noisy neighbours I’d get earplugs.

i work nights. I only take it when I need sleep in the day between nights. It’s does help, mainly by making it easier to get back to sleep when I wake up at 10/11.

i do need earplugs as well though as it doesn’t help me to sleep through normal daytime noise.

Yes, I take it occasionally, the hard core one-a-night one with Diphenhydramine. Within half an hour I feel really drowsy. Other nights I take Kalms one-a-night (valerian root) which works a bit or 5-HTP.

Occasional use is fine, but you can be reliant on them.

Do you feel okay in the morning or groggy ? As I've used night nurse before for sleep and feel like shit in the morning

Twiglets1 · 02/07/2022 18:17

I use the one a night one occasionally when I’m really struggling to sleep over successive nights. It works really well for me but I’m mindful not to use it too often. I feel a bit groggy when I first wake up but that feeling only lasts about an hour then I feel normal again

RaraRachael · 02/07/2022 18:23

I've taken it on and off for about a year as I'd trouble getting off to sleep. It worked really well initially but I've found recently that it only lasts for about 2 hours and then I wake up again,

amongst my night shift colleagues it seems that we either prefer one or the other.

night nurse leaves me feeling like crap, but nytol is fine. As long as I sleep long enough I feel fine. Others are the opposite, night nurse works well but nytol leaves them a bit bleurgh.

so hopefully nytol should be better for you.

Greybeardy · 02/07/2022 19:20

I get really bad restless legs with it.

gottaloveascamhun · 02/07/2022 19:25

I'm taking some to a festival as its so hard to sleep. Hoping it helps especially with white noise on a headband headphone thing

Stressofherregard · 02/07/2022 19:31

I've used Nytol on and off for years and it's always worked. However it also makes me feel thick headed the next day.
fyi I also take other meds which I think exacerbate the brain fog.

Ooo ok that's useful thank you

It's weird - since i got some the other day I've slept well anyway I think it's psychological cos I know it's there if I need it

blugray · 03/07/2022 13:37

during the pandemic I was shift working with nhs and also generally stressed so after doing nights, I’d end up being wide awake during the night and falling asleep at like 10am and sleeping all day

herbal nitol didn’t help me, but the over the counter tablets did. I only took them for 3 nights which was enough to reset my sleeping routine and I didn’t need them after.

Gwenhwyfar · 03/07/2022 13:43

"I do make sure that I only do this occasionally though as I would worry about becoming reliant."

I was "addicted" once as I would get a headache if I didn't take it, like some people do with coffee. I got off it very easily though. This was abotu 30 years ago and I haven't taken it since.

BEAM123 · 03/07/2022 13:44

I have used Nytol on and off at different points over the last 20 years. I didn't get on with the green herbal one, it made me more awake 🤷
But the blue is good.
I recently used it for jetlag and I slept through on the nights I took it and was awake half the night when I didn't. I use the 25mg (2 per night) tablets and under normal circumstances 1 can be enough. I don't feel zonked in the morning with them either, I just wake up as normal.

flutterbybabycakes · 03/07/2022 13:44

As antihistamines go Chlorphenamine (Piriton) works better for me and I do believe it lacks some of the worse side effects from the Diphenhydramine (Nytol), even though the former is not marketed for sleep, it's the same thing; a drowsy antihistamine.

threadneedle · 03/07/2022 13:48

Nytol didn't work for me, but I find Melatonin absolutely great for insomnia. GP prescribed it, and the a friend brought me back a huge bottle from the US where it's over the counter.

Appalonia · 03/07/2022 13:54

Wax earplugs from Boots are great for muffling sound, much better than foam.
