Tonsil cancer tests - any experiences?

I have had a swollen left tonsil for at least four weeks (that is when I first saw it). I had two lots of antibiotics that did nothing and saw an ENT consultant yesterday. He said that he can’t see what the cause is and that is not due to a recent infection. He has said I need an MRI and have my left tonsil out to rule out tonsil cancer. I am now petrified and look for any experiences of going through the same thing - thanks in advance x

Not quite the same but my left tonsil has been up for over 2 months but I've also got reflux, food getting stuck in throat and swollen lymph nodes.
Have endoscopy booked in 3 weeks, GP said if they dont find anything then he'll refer me to ENT.
I'm terrified I have oesophageal cancer which has spread to tonsil. I've no advice but I wanted to let you know you are not alone Flowers . I hope all your results come back clear and there is another explanation.

A friend had tonsil cancer. The treatment was pretty gruelling but he is fine now, extremely active & healthy. Good luck op.

My husband went through this after reoccurring mouth ulcers and problems with his tonsils. It was a terrifying time - he had a tonsillectomy to remove both, had them biopsied, and there was no cancer.

Sending warm thoughts to you

Thanks @3monkeybars I am glad everything was ok for him x how did the surgery go - I have heard it is harder for adults having them out?

My husband had to have his out due to one being bigger than the other and concerns of what that could mean. (It was picked up incidentally by the dentist and he was referred to ENT who suggested removal to check them as a precaution. Thankfully after biopsy they were found to be normal. I won't sugar coat it though. Yes it's very painful whilst healing. In the 15 years I've been with my husband I've not seen him cry but the pain nearly reduced him to tears so please keep dosed up on some strong pain medication. Good luck to you xx

It was pretty hard for him (he is terrible with pain!!)... the first week was difficult but he was back eating solid food within 3 days or so and absolutely worth it for him to stop the worries

Hello, did you get any diagnosis? I'm going through the same situation. I'm petrified of fear

Youngkid · 24/03/2023 07:54

@restingrudeface You got some diagnosis, I have the exact same thing as you and I'm petrified with fear

@Youngkid I'm sorry you are in this position, I know how frightening it is. Mine turned out to be nothing serious, I have a hernia which causes the excess acid and can cause problems swallowing, I've changed medication and the acid is pretty much under control.
The ENT wasn't concerned about my tonsil and said the neck issues were probably caused by TMJ - tensing muscles etc. and the swallowing issues could also be the anxiety around it making it difficult to swallow. He had a look down the throat and there were no issues.
I hope your situation also turns out be something simple.
