Any advice on potential hypothyroidism? I am losing my mind...

Hi,

Could anyone possibly interpret my thyroid results?

TSH 4.02
Free T4 11.0

I have all the symptoms of hypothyroidism, which my mum and aunt have, but my GP seems to think the reading is fine.

Over the past few years, my TSH has gone from 2.8 then 3.2 and now 4.02. My free T4 has gradually dropped too.

I'm 33, if that helps.

I would appreciate any advice.

Best wishes

Agree with posters above, particularly if ttc. I got Hashimotos after post partum thyroiditis with my first child. The GPS were pretty clueless - I also used the health unlocked site. I was suffering from infertility and recurrent miscarriage and the docs didn't seem to know that tsh needed to be below 2.5.

Beware tsh being too low/thyroid over supplemented for sustained periods though, as it can cause osteoporosis

Thyroxine is not a magical key to weight loss I'm afraid, but if you're on enough for long enough, you should be able to start losing eventually.

@caringcarer Thank you. I've known something isn't right for around a year. I've become heavy and lazy, so to speak, but that just isn't me. I've also noticed that my head is foggy. I will go upstairs and forget what I went up there for. How long did it take for your levothyroxine to kick in?

You should get a boost very quickly, but you might find it doesn't resolve all your symptoms. Some people need the full thyroid hormone replaced, not just the T4 that's in levo. Get a full thyroid panel done (including FT3 and antibodies) and that should give you some more information. The people at TPA uk are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful.

Can I ask how long does it take to start losing weight after starting levothroxine? I have been on 2.5 years & I have gained nearly 3 stone, my BMI is 41 now, I'm disabled & can't exercise.

I have not lost any weight, but it has stopped the rapid weight gain so I don’t need to be so very very careful about what and how much I eat.

Now I can eat normal sized potions, whereas before I was eating toddler sized portions. I still gain weight if I snack a lot or eat larger sized adult portions.
