Thyroid results

I'm awaiting a call from my GP to discuss urgent treatment for my thyroid. I've felt shit for months? Had a blood test yesterday.

T4- 84
T3- 38
Tsh 0.01

Is this why I've felt so unwell and why I've had no periods for 3 months? I'm 30 btw, my dr spoke to me via the online portal but wants to speak on the phone later.

Looks like you have an overactive thyroid and it'll be making you feel really horrible. They should start you on carbimazole and possible propanadol - depending.

It maybe with this treatment that your thyroid will revert back to normal, but may take up to 24 months to do so

Yes, as PP said, you have an overactive thyroid. Your results are very similar to mine when I was diagnosed 3 years ago.

The GP put me on a low dose of Carbimazole immediately and referred me to endocrinology at the hospital who put me on a much higher dose of Carbimazole until my T3 & T4 levels started coming down then I spent another year on a very low dose while things levelled out. I've been off the Carbimazole for 18 months now and for the moment everything seems to be staying within normal levels.

When I saw the consultant who put me on the higher dose she said that they broadly expect around a third of people to come off the medication and become overactive again almost immediately, around a third of people to stay within normal levels for a few years but then gradually become overactive again and around a third to stay in normal levels permanently.

There are surgical options if you relapse but they usually mean medication for life afterwards so it's not necessarily the straightforward option.

Once you start on Carbimazole you should be feeling much better quite quickly.

Good luck with it all!

Can I ask you what your symptoms are ?
I've got a fasting blood test next week for many things , they are checking my thyroid levels too

cricketwidoww · 30/06/2022 10:44

@the80sweregreat fast heart rate (mine is 150 sitting down) sweatiness, not being tolerant of heat, flushed face and hands, pooing 7+ times a day, I've lost 1 stone in 2 weeks, anxiety, getting angry very quickly, difficulty sleeping, tremors, weak muscles and exhaustion.

I've spoken to the dr and she's put me on 60mg of carbimazole, I hope it works

I hope that the meds help you.

@cricketwidoww No problem, glad you managed to get the carbimazole quickly.

Just a note of caution - while your thyroid is overactive your metabolism is revving really fast and you will be burning calories really quickly, hence the rapid weight loss, frequent toilet visits and high resting heart rate.

The carbimazole slows everything down so in a few weeks you will need to be mindful of how much you're eating otherwise you will start to put weight on rapidly.

Like you I lost around a stone quite quickly prior to diagnosis and once on the high dose medication I put it back on steadily but I did find I ended up about half a stone over where I started by the time I came off the medication altogether 18 months later. I think I had got into the habit of being able to eat bigger portions and snack more frequently without consequence and it did take a bit of an effort to break the cycle.

I'm back at a normal healthy weight now but wish I'd known to be aware of this before I started on the carbimazole as it might have saved me having to go to the effort of losing the extra half a stone once I was fully recovered.

@bigdecisionstomake haha that is a fair point!

Certainly overactive at the moment, so you will now need antibody testing to try to establish why.

This will explain why you don't feel well.
