DS (5 months) woke up tonight with a sort of strange noise when he was breathing and a bark like cough, so we rushed him up to A&E and the doctor has said he has croup and has given him a dose of steroids, I've never even heard of croup until tonight, has anyone else has experience of it?

Welcome to the Croup Club. Both my two have had it about once a year for the last four years, from about the same age as your ds.

Tip, buy a humidifier and get that in his room. Croup always seems to strike my two when they're coming down with a cold. If you hear the cough starting before the wheeze, give him some calpol - it soothes the throat and really stops the barking cough in it's tracks.

If he should get it when he's older (hope he doesnt') the honey juice is great as sadly honey is not recommended before 12 mnths. Mix honey with hot water so it melts and top up with orange juice and cold water, let him sip it.

If he starts to have it more often, ask for som salbutamol(sp?) liquid. It is a liquid dose of steriods which is used by asthmatics. That also helps greatly.

He'll be fine probably by tomorrow morning, but he may come down with a cold.

Don't worry too much It's definitely sounds far worse than it is.

It often runs in families: my brother and I had it and my dd had it when she was little. Kids tend to grow out of it when they get to school age. Apart from the remedies mentioned above, I found that taking the child out into the damp night air (well wrapped) helps.

DD used to get it regularly, DS now gets it too - although he is also asthmatic, DD is not.

We used to spend alot of time in the bathroom with the shower running hot, doors closed to make a steamy atmosphere.

If you cannot get a humidifier use damp towels on the radiator.

my ds has just got over croup poor thing not nice for them

hope your ds gets better soon it does sound worse keep calpol going my ds was given a linctus which relaxed muscles to prevent to much coughing

as coughing hurts throat more gp just advised to keep dosing with calpol it eases normall after 3 days from having the seal sound

My dd1 had croup and I was given antibiotics for her and told to sit with her in the bathroom with steam to ease her breathing. It does pass and it does sound worse than it is.

DD2 has croup, often after a mild cold. Apparently it is wise to avoid Medised and Calcold because the antihistimine in them dries things things up even furthur.
