Sudden migraines

My DF has recently developed frequent migraines. He has had them most of his adult life, but was only once or twice a year. It is now happening most days. Sumatriptan relieves them, but what could be the cause?. He does have high blood pressure, but this is well controlled with medication and regularly monitored. Grateful for any ideas/advice?

Could it be the blood pressure medication?

Thank you for your answer @CrazyRatLover . Interesting I will ask if he has started any new meds recently. It has happened within the last 3 weeks.

Migraine is a debilitating health issue; sorry your husband is going through it. has anything changed recently in your husband's diet? Inflammation response to certain foods/nutrients can result in increased frequency of migraine attacks in some patients.

Assuming it's not the meds, migraine is a complex neurological disease for which the cause is basically unknown.

If it's in the family though, it commonly is passed down through the generations. Both my parents have migraine, both me and DB have it. DH also has it, as does his dad.

I'm the worst affected with chronic migraine. My Dad gets stomach migraine which lasts 30 mins and I'm very jealous that he has such a mild type by comparison 😂

Did your DP' parents have migraine? Or grandparents? It was often just called "a bad head" or referring to someone having "one of their heads".

Also, what do the attacks look like? What level is the pain?

I'm thinking whether it's a cluster headache attack - often called a "suicide headache" because it's so painful, but it happens in sudden cycles and can be very short bursts of pain (I've had it twice - the pain element was about 45mins each night) but attacks are very severe and happen at about the same time each day and can happen for weeks - or longer if you're really unlucky.

Has he had blood tests? We had someone with very severe headaches with nausea and weakness and it was Vitamin D deficiency, apparently really common. 😐
