Can't seem to find the thread for this topic - had very upseting visit to GP who is determined that I should keep the thing in despite side-effects getting worse. She thinks that a return to heavy bleeding would be worse than the horrendous PMT/BACK AND JOINT PAIN/HEADACHES/BREAST TENDERNESS none of which I had before I got the thing!

Has she offered to put you on the pill as well, to see if that would alleviate the side effects.

If not then get tha self down to your nearest Family Planning now, and they will remove it for you, could be a wait for an appt though so ring and ask.

expatinscotland · 15/01/2008 20:57

you need to see a GYN, you need a referral for a GYN because the Mirena isn't agreeing with you.

Furball · 15/01/2008 21:03

Visit your local Family planning, tell them it doesn't really agree with you and anyway you have decided to have another child.

Doctor is not playing fair if it is making you ill

Divastrop · 15/01/2008 21:06

there were a few threads a while back about this,i will have a look in a minute.

i had a mirena coil fitted at the family planning, and when i went back a week later having gained 10lbs and feeling like shit they said it wasnt the coil causing it.

i went to my gp and she did some blood tests and when they came back normal she removed it for me.she said FP would have been reluctant to remove it so soon because of the cost(they are about £90 each).

the weight fell off and i felt much better withing a month of it being removed

cottonflee · 15/01/2008 21:11

They cost £102 each. Not £90.

CALAMERO · 15/01/2008 21:15

GP wont prescribe pill because of migraine but as far as contaceptive goes sending DH for the snip - sick of taking all responsibility for this. Threads have disappeared but ultrasound shows that it's still there - thought they might be reluctant cos it's more difficult to remove.

i don' think it's fair to force a patient to keep something in them that they don't want.

cottonflee · 15/01/2008 21:20

Na, all fp clinics have special plastic coil retrievers which will remove 'thread less' coils. Your f*ing doc shouldn't have cut your threads so short.

Divastrop · 15/01/2008 21:22

my gp said £90-it was 9 months ago though.maybe theyve gone up

if you cant feel the threads then surely it must have moved and really ought to be removed anyway?

i had the mirena out and a copper coil put in(i refused to be left without contraception for even a day).

CALAMERO · 15/01/2008 21:23

Thanks cottonflee, thought it was going to be a nightmare to get out. If I go to the FP clinic do I have to inform my GP first?

OP posts:
cottonflee · 15/01/2008 21:28

No, you do not, you do not have to tell your GP anything, and they will not tell your GP either. Ring and make an appt though and tell the Receptionist you want it removed.

I ordered some Mirena's last Monday and they cost £102.00

One thing I would recomened is look here for your nearest clinic, and ring half an hour into the clinic to make your appt. It is really busy when the doors first open.

cottonflee · 15/01/2008 21:30

Oh and tell the doc/nurse that you have had an u/s and it is still visable. The FP clinic should be able to ring up the u/s dept and they will fax the results over if ness.

Hobnobfanatic · 15/01/2008 21:32

I really persevered with it, and when I asked for it to be removed, due to abdominal pain and feeling 'not right', the FPC was reluctant and kept telling me to wait longer.

When I finally snapped and insisted, they took it out, but I felt guilty - even though I'd really tried for a year with it!

Fortunately, the abdominal pain went within a week and it's all been ticketyboo since. I just wish they'd respected my wishes sooner and not kept persuading me to persevere.

cottonflee · 15/01/2008 21:38

Mirena's are a really cheap form of contraception think about it, £102.00 for 5 years it works out at half a penny a day.
It's just that they seem so expensive in the short term. Most clinic are reluctant to remove them within the first 6 months as it sometimes takes that long for them to settle down. After that, put your foot down.

CALAMERO · 15/01/2008 21:39

It is absolutely ridiculous that anyone should have to insist. I appreciate that these things take time to settle but I know my own body better than a GP and this is the third time in as many months that I've asked her to remove it. I've been made to feel like there's something wrong with me because I'm finding the symptoms dificult to cope with and feel guilty for 'inconveniencing them'. Well appointment will be made tomorrow and a change in GP seems like a good idea too. Thanks for the help.

Oh and I forgot to mention that I've had it for 18 months - I think that I should have put my foot down some time ago!

A few other things, they might take swabs, which take a week to come back. It might be that only a Doctor can remove coils at your local clinic, in which case there could be a wait for the appt, sometimes up to four weeks. If it is a wait, ask if there is another clinic which has a shorter waiting list, and ask for the number and the clinic timetable.
They will not remove them if you have had unprotected sex within the last week (maybe two, depends on the clinician). But, if that is the case, get the swabs done asap and make the appt for the nurse(swabs) and the doctor (removal) during the same phone call.
