I never checked mine pre-children so cant help, sorry. I believe though that once you have had children your cervix remains slightly dilated and not as tightly shut as women who have not had children. Could be completely wrong though. Wouldn't be the first time lol

I know your cervix moves up and down (although I think it is referred to as open and closed) during your cycle.

Also, once you've had a baby I think I'm right in saying that your cervix never goes back to its original position - something to do with it effacing(sp?) during labour.

MrsEi25 · 15/01/2008 20:20

i think that after childbirth the cervix stays open on alot of women not entirely obviously but about 0.5cm is the general information that i have read. i wouldnt know whether mine is any different as i dont partake in fishin around for it very often but iv heard quite a few others who do so maybe theyl have some more...erm.. hands on experience

Nope don't think so.
Funny how I never considered these things before I came onto MN, now I suspect, that my pelvic floor is right hard. In fact I reckon that it could take Ricky Hatton in a fight, although it might baulk a bit at the prospect of Floyd Mayweather.

I think mine is lower.

kittywise · 15/01/2008 20:23

I wondered whether it kind of "hung lower" iyswim?

perhaps I haven't a clue what I'm waffling on about as I can't say I had a good out poke around before kids. I remember a dr once saying it kin d of went to the side and back or something.

My smear nurse said to me "cough woman, cough i can't see anything"

Now is that good or bad ???

callmeovercautious · 15/01/2008 20:25

Yep - mine is a bit lower despite a bizzillion pelvic floor clenches Not so low it is in the way though iykwim?

Are you worried yours is too low?

fedup1981 · 15/01/2008 20:32

I've wondered this myself as since having a baby, sex can be uncomfortable in certain positions. It feels as if he's hitting too deep and I have to ask him to stop as it's painful. It doesn't feel lower to my fingers, but I didn't have much of a fish around down there pre-pregnancy so it's hard to tell.

kittywise · 15/01/2008 20:54

callmeovercautious, yeah I am a bit. I was wondering whether I'm having a prolapse as I've been feeling a really heavy dragging feeling. Then I thought that maybe the fact that I could feel my cervix didn't mean it was falling down.

It's not hanging out, but I can't ever remember being able to feel it before.

I just wondered whether having tonnes of kids would make a difference

callmeovercautious · 16/01/2008 22:12

If you are worried go and get it checked out. There are things that can be done but only if you get it looked at.

Don't be embarrassed, just maybe ask for a Lady GP when you phone for the appointment. And if you have had tonnes of kids then yes it would drop naturally anyway, does not mean nothing can be done, particularly if you are in pain.

MrsGeneHunt · 16/01/2008 22:14

under my bed

other than that,i dont know.

olsmum · 16/01/2008 22:17

i went for a smear today and nurse couldnt get to mine, the doctor had to go in manually (up to her elbow! well... slight exageration perhaps but felt like it) to feel where it was, apparently mine is quite far back, its the first time ive ever been told that, local nurse and gp have never had a problem!

MuthaHubbard · 17/01/2008 01:22

apparantly mine is quite far back - according to nurse who did my last smear.

fortyplus · 17/01/2008 01:26

My mum's cervix ended up appearing in her fanjo like a ping pong ball - she had a prolapsed uterus.

expatinscotland · 17/01/2008 02:56

apparently, a healthcare practitioner or doc can tell if you've had a vaginal delivery.

is such true?

when i talked to the GYN to do my ERPC, first thing he asked was if i'd born children and gotten to full dilation or vaginally delivered.

apparently, it's easier to dilate a woman who's already done it once or twice.

kittywise · 17/01/2008 21:51

Thanks for all your replies.

I went to see a lady doc on Monday and she said everything was fine and that it felt nice and high anyway she said it in an anterior position whereas for most women it is posterior, so perhaps that is why I can feel it more easily.

I am SO very relieved that all is ok.

I bought one of those electrical pelvic floor exercisers, they are supposed to be very good and do the exercises correctly.

The best thing though is that they do them for me and I can sit back and watch Jeremy Kyle

my midwife told me once that a pre pregnant cervix would feel like the end of a nose and a cervix late in pregnancy would feel like lips (on a mouth)

LynetteScavo · 17/01/2008 22:19

No idea about my cervix, but my legs used to come out of my body like this /, and now they come out like this ll.
