DH & frequent illness

Hi,
just posting to see if anyone else would back up my concern about my DH.
i’ll start by saying he is 32 yo, healthy BMI, semi active job, no other health issues, shit diet as in doesn’t eat enough fruit or veg, only when I make it part of an evening meal.
However, he gets ill, I would say, frequently, far more frequently than I do, possibly 5 or 6 times a year and when he does, it wipes him out.
as an example, 6 weeks ago he had yet another dose of bacterial tonsillitis needing 10 days of antibiotics. And yesterday, he came home from work fine and in a good mood, just a bit tired.
after we picked DD up from school, he said he was going to lay on the bed as he felt really drained, and he has pretty much been there ever since. When asked, his throat is sore, he is running a high fever, chills, feels drained so assuming it is tonsillitis again or possibly flu.

but is it normal for a generallh fit and healthy man to get ill so often and so bad that he can’t get out of bed for 3 days?
I’m thinking of asking him to go to the doctors when he feels well enough, to maybe see if there is something wrong with his immune system or if he is deficient in something, would you?

Totally willing to accept that i’m just being silly but not 6 weeks ago he was the same and I don’t know whether I should be concerned?

I was permanently ill, and was then diagnosed as diabetic.

I'd get him off to the GP for some bloods.

His diet won't be helping, but not it's normal for a young man to be ill so often.

Assuming he can get an appointment with a GP it would probably be useful for him to have some blood tests and a check on his general physical condition. At the very least the GP would then have some baseline figures to compare with future test results

Wbeezer · 23/06/2022 19:37

Tonsillitis is notorius for reoccurring though so I don't think he necessarily has an issue with his immune system causing it. They do still take people's tonsils out if they are having too many serious bouts.

ListenLinda · 23/06/2022 19:42

Can you just request a blood test?
I think he will probably think being a drama queen but to compare, I can’t remember the last time I was so ill I couldn’t get out of bed. DH has been about 3 times since Christmas.

@Wbeezer it’s not always tonsillitis though to be honest, it’s just that was the most recent illness and he said his throat was feeling sore.

How long has he been like this? Can you pinpoint an illness episode that triggered it off? Just thinking that he could have had Epstein Barr (Glandular fever) or Covid which knocked his immune system. This happened to me after glandular fever and again after COVID.

sunflowerandivy · 23/06/2022 20:28

I think in cases like this you just need to go with your gut. If something doesn't feel right then get some general bloods done at GP- liver, thyroid, blood count etc to see whether anything going on. Completely reasonable!

Iron deficiency?

A work friend of mine was always Ill and I wasn't always sympathetic as I had to cover for her. Turns out she had Lupus.

ListenLinda · 24/06/2022 07:09

@Choconuttolata this particular episode he has been poorly for 2 days now, he think he may have had covid in Feb, in April he had tonsilitus.

but it’s been the last couple of years now. He’s up this morning and still isn’t right, I mentioned it to him this morning and he didn’t argue with me, but did admit he was a bit apprehensive about speaking to a GP, as he thought it was just normal. I said it would be good to know because if it’s something we can rectify through diet it’s simple enough but otherwise, it would be good to know.
