Any dentists on here.

I had root treatment on a bottom tooth around 25 years ago and every time I go for my check up we say the tooth is reaching the end of its life but it has caused no problems or pain until 2 weeks ago. It hurts when I apply pressure and there is a niggling pain there as well as neueralgia. I can cope with it ok and it isnt getting any worse when the pain is at its worst I have taken ibuprofen. I thought I should get the dentist to have a look as although not overly painful I am aware of the pain if that makes sense.

Managed to get an emergency appointment yesterday and I have been told I have a dental cyst - he showed me the cyst on the x ray and it is quite large and he isnt comfortable taking the tooth out and treating the cyst so he has referred me to a specialist. There is a waiting list for this specialist so it could be a while.

Can anyone tell me what the treatment involves and is waiting ok.

The tooth will be removed and the cyst shelled out. The reason you've been referred is it's normal for any tissue removed from the body to be looked by the Histologists to check what it is. The hospital is able to do this.

Cysts are usually removed in one go by lifting the gum back and the gum is closed with stitches. With very large cysts sometimes there is a risk of the jaw being weakened so the cyst is marsupialized so opened up and allowed to shrink. Once the cyst ,usually a Dentigerous cyst, is removed they heal quickly.

Often cysts are symptomless and get picked up if they develop infection or are found on an xray. They are often slowly developing and have been there a long time without any pain or symptoms. So it's OK to wait.

I know this is an old thread but I was told a month ago I have a dental cyst too and I was just wondering how long you waited and how it all went? Thanks!
