Contact lenses

So I am looking to getting contact lenses and I'm just wondering..

Do you prefer Daily or Monthly ?
I am currently with Specsavers for my glasses, would you recommend just staying with them for my contact lenses or have you got any suggestions ?
And any other information I might need to make my decision !?

I have wore glasses for a few years now but I miss my face ! 😂

I used to wear monthly's everyday for years until this past year and now I suffer from really bad dry eyes at 37. So now I wear dailies and even then have to be on top of eye drops and make sure I don't wear them too long. It depends on your age and the condition of your eyes but I think I would recommend dailies for someone starting fresh.

newbiename · 22/06/2022 10:09

I have had both. I prefer the dailies as you can just throw them away , no solution or cases.
I am with Specsavers and pay £33. I get half price glasses as well.

Contact lens are definitely cheaper ordered online but you have to make sure you order the right prescription including any astigmatism etc. maybe start off by getting them from spec savers and when you're comfortable using them find them online? Lensstore is what I use.

hamdden12 · 22/06/2022 10:15

I'm with specsavers and you get free eye tests and discount on 1 pair of glasses a year plus if for any reason you lose a lens they'll give you a free replacement. It's convenient for me because they post them out as well so no worries about finding the time to call in store.

BeaLola · 22/06/2022 10:15

I have used dailies for years - much prefer them - used to buy from lensstore now switched to Specsavers

Discovereads · 22/06/2022 10:17

I use daily contact lenses. My prescription is quite complex so I order mine through a private optician.

ExtremelyDedicated · 22/06/2022 10:17

I've had monthlies for about 15 years and love them. £19 a month by post from my optician with all checkups included in the cost and a discount on glasses.

ElizabethCaroline · 22/06/2022 10:19

Dailies. Much easier and convenient. I tried monthlies for a while but I kept getting eye infections and I got some dodgt contact lens solution that didn't agree with me eyes so switched back to dailies. T

I use a mix of dailies and one week extended wear ones. Hayfever season I’m on dailies but most of the time I’ll use extended wear as it’s just so much easier!

EarthquakesinEastActon · 22/06/2022 10:21

I’ve been wearing monthlies for about 35 years with no issues at all. For the past 25 years or so those have been from Specsavers, and the service has been great. I pay £13 a month for lenses, solutions, cases etc, and my subscription also includes my eye test for free and an annual contact lens check. You also get various discounts off glasses. Your lenses come by post automatically every 3 months.

I recommend the service, but given they are franchises you need to have confidence in the optometrist and contact lens specialist at your branch. If you’re happy with your current SS people then it’s worth having a free trial with their contacts to see if you get on with them.

underneaththeash · 23/06/2022 07:17

The risk of infection and allergic reactions is lower in dailies, but they're more expensive. The optician will go through your options when you go in for your trial. If you're happy with your current clinic, I wouldn't change.

greenbirdsong · 23/06/2022 07:37

I have daily disposables from vision express. I pay £38 per month and that includes my check ups. I do have different prescriptions in each eye and astigmatism which makes them more expensive.

Reusable ones are cheaper but I like having a fresh pair daily and not having the faff of cleaning and storing them.

I do suffer with dry eyes but use drops, I use the accvue moist lenses which help with the dryness but drops also needed at times.

IVFGotThis05 · 23/06/2022 11:44

Oh thanks for all of your response!

I have booked a consultation with Specsavers for 2 weeks time, I think I would also go for the dailies to be honest! They have a free trial too so I can see if I can wear them !

Ive had both.
Monthly- I kept loosing one.
Dailies- much prefer, Chuck away at the end of the day

RedCarsGoFaster · 23/06/2022 11:50

I have monthly, and pay for the type that you could sleep in. I don't sleep in them though! I got them for my old job tbh where I could be on duty for 24hrs (police), so needed something that would last a long shift. I also have dry eyes and these have been brilliant for the last 15+yrs.

They don't like to give them out though - the risk of infection is higher, especially if you sleep in them, but I don't do that. It just means that if I'm caught away from home for extended periods, I can still see and don't have to carry spare lenses.

I also use the peroxide solution to clean them - no need to fiddle, no risk of them staying dirty, but you have to (HAVE TO!!!) respect the 7hr rule before putting them in again of you'll burn your eye. You'll only do it once it twice. 😂 I now leave them a minimum of 9hrs between wearing.

ExtremelyDedicated · 23/06/2022 12:05

Mine are the extended wear monthlies too, I don't sleep in them overnight as it means showering in them which also isn't recommended and the optician prefers me not to sleep in them. It does mean you can snooze on the sofa or on long journeys and wear them for extended periods (I wear them all my waking hours most days).

Before I switched to these about 15 years ago I had 20 years in rigid gas permeables but have never tried dailies. Never had any infections or serious issues.
