Supplements for anxiety

Has anyone found a supplement such as Kalms, Chamomile tea, Ashwaganda (that's the one that google seems to come up with first when you search), Kava, Valerian that actually makes a difference.
I just realised I have a cupboard full of these things because I'm a poor sleeper, but most likely didn't stick long enough with any of them because I found they made no difference when I initially took them.
Online reviews seem to vary from 5 stars to 1 for most of them.
I often found they give me indigestion, another reason I didn't persevere.
Has anyone found a good one?

None of them worked for me. Valerian gave me horrendous nightmares.
I'm trying magnesium glycinate to help me sleep.

CherryReid · 19/06/2022 08:14

I have some Magnesium glycinate 400 but the tablets are huge. Perhaps they might still help if I take them with evening meal.
I must have a couple or more hundred pounds worth of stuff in the cupboard!
I started keeping them because I found I was buying things for a second time after reading online about the latest 'cure'.

I an
interested also . I am trying to avoid going back on ssri but really struggling. I struggle with stomach issues with them also really sore stomach and wind.

The only supplement that helps me sleep is melatonin. You can buy it online from the US. I get it from Biovea.

For anxiety I find CBD oil good.

Someone recommended Kirkland’s Sleep Aid on this site. It’s absolutely magical. The only thing that gets me to sleep if I’m suffering from insomnia, and no side effects.

The only one I've found make any difference is oral lavender oil, which Kalms do. A study found that it has an identical effect to 0.5mg lorazepam. I've been taking it for a few weeks as I've been having a bit of a tough time, and if I skip a day, I definitely notice.

Valerian works for me. My anxiety isn’t horrendous, it was very bad for a period of events. But sleep was an issue so I tried Kalms: nothing has ever worked for my sleep when in an insomnia cycle but these did which then in turn helped my anxiety. I do notice I’m a bit more twitchy and anxious when I don’t take them for a week or two. I do get head aches if I take them every day for a few weeks so I take them maybe three/ four times a week.

However when my anxiety caused palpitations and physical symptoms I realised I needed to do something kalms we’re only part of it. I was offered talking therapy but didn’t want it. Basically exercise ( cardio) made a massive difference. I also do yoga and strength but I found I need the cardio. I also have magnesium flake or Epsom salt baths which I think help too. I also used magnesium spray.

I haven’t had palpitations since 2020

I find that for magnesium to be effective, I have to take it earlier in the day. No later than lunchtime.

CherryReid · 19/06/2022 13:08

Great I'll try the magnesium now. Will look into lavender oil and have melatonin so might try a half tab tonight.

Magnesium glycinate, really notice the difference when I’m not taking it, but I have to take it before lunch or it gives me the most insane dreams

CherryReid · 20/06/2022 06:43

I will try the magnesium for a couple of weeks. At least no bad side effects.

Can I ask what the magnesium spray is and where you get it ? Do you prefer it to tablets ?

Eeksilon · 20/06/2022 06:53

Jumping on here but what brand and amount of magnesium glycinate are people taking daily? I'm taking some but not convinced of efficiency of current one and down to my last couple....

morenutellaplease · 20/06/2022 06:58

I found St John's Wort really good and taking two tablets help me a lot with sleep.

5htp is also something I would try if this didn't help

jeffersonsam · 20/06/2022 07:11

Better to add food items contains rich amounts magnesium, vitamin D, saffron, omega-3s, chamomile, L-theanine, vitamin C, curcumin, CBD, and multivitamins. These will help to reduce anxiety symptoms and also makes the mind calm. Doing simple workouts and playing games will also makes the mind activity well and good.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/06/2022 07:17

Magnesium is really important for sleep. I take the tablets with a mouthful of food as they're so huge!

sandyposy · 20/06/2022 07:23

Mag365 powder is an easy to take magnesium; you dissolve in hot water then top up with cold. I prefer the unflavoured version but exotic lemon is ok too. It really helps with sleep and I notice my sleep becomes a lot poorer if I stop taking it. I have it just before bed.

CherryReid · 20/06/2022 08:35

I am drinking Yogi Kava tea from tea bags.
A sort of Cinnamon flavour and sweetish - I think it is a calming, so hard to tell, but probably better than something with caffeine it.
