Hard round lump on palm, any ideas?

Just found today a hard round lump on my left palm, not painful per se but is a bit uncomfortable if pressed. Nothing on right palm. Photo to show position, see green circle. Not sure if it's a gp thing or not?

Hard round lump on palm, any ideas?

Hi OP, I think this could be a ganglion cyst, they're harmless and usually go away on their own but do see a Dr if you're worried.

BinBandit · 18/06/2022 12:23

Thanks, I'm going to give it a wee while and see if it goes away or get's worse and make a decision then. I have no other health issues so not worried in particular, it just feels a bit weird.

I have one on the same hand and exact place as yours! I felt it just before covid struck and mentioned it the the doctor when I was there for something else.
She felt it and said that's a nodule, she said it can eventually start to pull the fingers in towards the palm of the hand and when that happens she said you can have steroid injections.
She wasn't worried at all about it, hasn't caused me any problems so far, she did ask if a parent had them as nodules in palm of hand can be hereditary
Check with the doctor next time you visit

Thanks, Google came up with that and I had an Aunt with the condition that pulls your fingers in so I did think it might be that. Glad to hear all is well so far.

My husband has the finger-pulling condition too. I forget the real name.

He has 2/3 nodules in each palm and sometimes they ache and cause pain, especially if he’s done something fiddly like hand sanding (he is a cabinet maker so it’s really impacted his ability to do all the work) but have not progressed in the 2 years since diagnosis. Eventually when they pull the fingers in he will be offered surgery.

@AGreatUsername - that was my first thought.

It's called Dupytron's Contracture. www.nhs.uk/conditions/dupuytrens-contracture/

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 21/06/2022 15:32

More likely to be dupuytrens contracture rather than a ganglion due to its position. It may start getting thicker over time and can pull your fingers in. It can be released by an orthopaedic hand surgeon with a minor procedure.

Thanks all. I did reply earlier during lunch break but lost my reply.

I did think it could be that as I do remember my mum saying that her sister was having an Op to straighten out her finger. I don't recall anyone else having the same issues but we are not a very long lived or close family.

I'm sorry your husband is having issues @AGreatUsername

I'm not going to rush to anywhere as it doesn't seem like doing things earlier will have any affect on this. It's not causing me any issues. It's slightly uncomfortable if i press or rub it firmly but other than that nothing. It's also luckily on my left hand and I've examined the rest of my palms on both hands thoroughly and can't feel anything more. It could have been there for months presumably.

I hope everyone else affected keeps well.

I have had a lump in similar position for over 20 years. Doctor I think said it was gristle/cartilage. Said do nothing unless caused a problem, if problem would need minor op which would be hospital due to location.

xalo · 21/06/2022 20:06

My mum had this so when I found that I was getting the same I decided to resist!
I've been doing gentle backward stretches of the fingers for a few months and also firm massage of the area and it's made a massive difference. The lump is tiny now and completely soft.

BinBandit · 21/06/2022 20:12

That's good to know xalo. I don't have particularly flexible hands. my fingers don't bend back at all. I'm going to make a concerted effort to do a bit of massage and stretch them properly. My son has hypermobile joints so can bend his fingers way back and he laughs at my flat hands!

@xalo that's interesting I'm actually going to try this thanks! The thought of my fingers being pulled into my palm is something I'm not looking forward to!
