i would get it it from medic alert uk, if you are on benefits i believe you can get one for free. all details are put onto a medical database. it will have docs contact, next of kin, medical issues, etc etc.

dh needs a new one.

katz · 14/01/2008 21:46

nope not on benefits, i like those ones because i think dd2 will actually wear it! i really want it in worse case scenerio situations, she's only 2.5 so highly unlikely to not be in the presence of adult who is fully aware. when we were travelling this winter i thought what if something happened and DH and I weren't able to tell them that extreme caution needs to be taken with dd2.

well if something happened to you and dh and werent able to tell them, then i really do think medic alert is the way to go. unless it is just no asperin and no anasthethic. they do a pretty purple/pink one for kids.

katz · 14/01/2008 21:55

basically its just that she has mastocytosis and caution has to be taken with asprin and anesthetic high risk of anaphylatic reaction. Like the idea of the medi alert but not sure we need it.

and the contact details of her consultant.

My DD has got the pink and purple medic alert band, it's a sports band and she keeps it on now altough we lost the first band because it used to be too big for her wrist so I put it round her ankle-she, quite predictably pulled it off and must've chucked it while we were out. I like the ice gem ones but felt safer with medic alert somehow as I think it is very recognisable. They also do more traditional bracelet type stuff.

Misdee · 14/01/2008 21:57

its there if u want to look into it sparklygothkats dd1 has the pink/purple one. dh had the normal necklace tag, but needs a new one now he is post transplant.

Misdee · 14/01/2008 21:58

i think the offical medic alert is more recongised for what it is. and the tag flips over on the bracelets, so they dont have to be removed.

used2bthin · 14/01/2008 21:59

The med alert comes with a card which you can put more info on, name of consultant, emergency plan, medication etc. Apparently paramedics will know to look for it if they see the sign. I am going to put one in the car window this has just reminded me.

katz · 14/01/2008 22:01

thanks like the pink/purple one. will see what dd2 thinks! she wants an orange one, but can't find one anywhere!

so how does the medi one work? i buy a bracelet for £25 then pay £25/year to keep her details registered?

Yes it is like that. DD is on DLA so we got the membership free, not sure how much it would've been and come to think of it not sure about whether you have to renew each year as we've only had DD's about 11 months! Then you pay for whichever bracelet you like. There will be a refernce number so that in the event of an accident medical staff could ring and get further details from medic alert if necessary, they have a nurse to advise you about what should go on it all and I found them very helpful.

brimfull · 14/01/2008 22:17

ds has medic-alert one for allergies

YEs, we pay annual subscription .

He wears plain metal chain one as the others irritated his eczema.

katz · 14/01/2008 22:25

some children with dd's condition get dla but i haven't looked into it. She doesn;t need any special help so i kinda think whats the point, but happy to be corrected .

It is a very long form so I would advise getting help if you do decide to find out. For the medic alert thing though I could be wrong but I think you have to be on middle or higher rat. Worth finding out about though especially if others with the same condition get it. It is assessed by whether she needs extra care above what another child her age would need. Horrible form but I'm glad I did it as DD is on highest rate now, it gets reassessed this dec so will hae to do it again. I had someone from contact a family come to my house to help me do it which was great.

katz · 15/01/2008 09:22

to be honest i don't think she should get it, she needs a little extra supervision than most children but since she has no known triggers and therefore doesn't go into anaphylactic i think i will leave it. I guess it depends on what school say, have just put in her forms to start in foundation 1 in sept. and have to discuss this all with the SENCO.

DS2 also has the plain metal chain braclet from MedicAlert for his heart condition and allergies. He's had it since he was 2, even thought he is never far from an adult. I mainly got it incase something happened to dh or I and we couldn't talk for hm. Well worth payng the annual fee for peace of in in my opinion.
