Thread for those of us who have excessive sweating/hyperhydrosis

Wanderlustnearorfar · 16/06/2022 21:06

After reading a thread earlier on it got me thinking and I've looked through the health topics and can't find any particular thread for those of us who have hyperhydrosis or suffer from excessive sweating to turn to if we are after advice or just fancy a chat with people who are in the same situation?
I guess I'm looking to share experiences, tips, advice and talk about experiences to other people.
I have palmar and plantar hyperhydrosis, which I manage with treatment but I’m not always consistent and it doesn’t always provide consistent results which can impact day to day.

Hi, I sweat! It really annoys me as it’s only my armpits and I don’t smell.

I use persperex as it’s the only thing that’ll work. It stings when I put it on though soo I go through phases of using it. I use it mostly in the summer when I want to wear t shirts.

In milder weather I always wear a cardy/fleece to hide the sweat.

On nights out I’ve been known to dry my pits under the hand dryer!

Susurrar · 16/06/2022 21:11

Hi! I’ll join in. My face and hair can be dripping with sweat for no obvious reason. It’s a PITA and I haven’t found anything to actually remedy it.

Wanderlustnearorfar · 16/06/2022 23:20

Hi all!! So glad to see some posts. @Susurrar Have you been to the Gp there are things they can offer. I got a referal to dermatology and have tried a wide range of treatments and options. They have oral tablets they can prescribe. @Offandonagain i use anhydrohol forte roll on a few times a week which is the best I have found for me.

I'll join too. I use perspirex too even though it makes my underarms itch and burn (I do use it as directed) but at least it puts paid to sweaty underarms and smelling within an hour of showering, especially in this heat.

Susurrar · 17/06/2022 00:30

@Wanderlustnearorfar I have seen my GP but she thinks it’s part of a larger issue - iron deficiency. I’m permanently tired and out of breath and iron supplements aren’t doing very much.

CherryRipe1 · 17/06/2022 01:12

I think medical Botox us the way to go. I have also seen something where you put your hands in a tray of water (?) and some kind of mild electrical current passes through it & reduces sweating. I'll see if I can find it & post a link.

IdiotCreatures · 17/06/2022 01:22

I don't smell and apart from hot days don't get horribly sweaty.
But sometimes, usually related to stress or excitement, I get streams of sweat running down my arms.
Like my armpits are crying.
Does anyone else get this?

SecretPineapple · 17/06/2022 01:23

I have excessive sweating from my scalp, sort of above and behind my ears, and at the back of my head. It gives me wet hair and a damp collar. I hate it, it's so embarrassing. I haven't yet called my GP about it, but I'm interested to read it can be related to iron deficiency. I've been iron deficient in the past. I'm currently out of breath very quickly, feel tired a lot and have the sweating. But I had a blood test two weeks ago for something else and my iron levels are fine.

Sunnytwobridges · 17/06/2022 02:17

I’m a face and scalp sweater. All my life and especially when I’m nervous or anxious.

dozydoo · 17/06/2022 07:15

Hi, I'll join this little thread too!

I sweat literally everywhere, it doesn't even have to be particularly hot! I sweat more than my husband & it makes me feel gross. I went to the gp about it a few years ago & I was just shrugged at. I did try a prescription anti perspirant, but it stung & burnt my armpits & made them so sore, but my gp said there was nothing else they could do & i'd have to just grin & bare it 🙄

User4387075 · 17/06/2022 07:22

I sweat a lot under the arms, constant wet patches, and also my face, it doesn't bother me as much now I'm in my 60s, in the summer I wear loose cotton patterned Seasalt tunics with a white background a lot and find it doesn't show with these so gives me more confidence and in the winter generally wear a cardigan.

I get exactly that but from behind my knees.

My hands sweat excessively and have done all my life. I used to get told off for it at school - as if I could do anything about it!

CherryRipe1 · 17/06/2022 17:03

Google Iontophoresis machine. They can be hired but don't know about purchasing.

Gherkingreen · 17/06/2022 17:20

I've always perspired heavily, I'm late 40s now, not overweight, no underlying health issues, exercise regularly, quite fit.

I can't seem to regulate my body temp, after exercise I look like I've had a shower, I can be clammy after a short walk, my back/chest and face particularly. I think it's genetic, DF is the same. We both also get very cold quickly in cold weather and have Reynauds triggered by cold weather/supermarket freezer aisle 🤨.
I asked GP about it years ago but they just shrugged. Used to be really self conscious about it but less bothered now as I get older. I reckon it's an issue with circulation/temp regulation.

Tanfastic · 17/06/2022 21:34

Hello all, yep a sweaty beast here too 🙈. I have suffered from hyperhydrosis all my life. I mainly sweat excessively on my feet, back amd groin (I know 🙄). I used to sweat excessively on my hands but had surgery 25 years ago to sort that out. They still get a bit damp now and again but only what I'd consider normal sweating whereas they used to drip constantly. That operation changed my life totally. I did get compensatory sweating on my back though following the op but I can cope with that.

I literally put strong antiperspirant everywhere and use plenty of talc, am scrupulous about hygiene but it's really hard to keep on top of sometimes. I do constantly ask dh if I stink but he swears I don't 😳. Luckily my underarms don't sweat as much as other areas but my feet constantly slide around in sandals if I have bare feet. I am starting to try perspirex to see if that helps.

Thiskidcanbounce · 19/06/2022 22:55

Can I join in too - not strictly for my but my DD(7) suffers with this on her hands and feet. They literally drip with water & she often struggles with things like holding her pencil in class & doing anything that requires strong grip. She also suffers with pompholyx (type of eczema) which is made worse by the sweating & causes extremely itchy & painful blisters on her fingers/toes. And she’s already sweating under her arms too.
She was referred to the hospital a year ago, GP was concerned it is unusual for a child her age to suffer with this problem, but still waiting to hear from them as they messed up & sent her to the wrong department initially. Wish I knew of some way to help her through the summer months which are the hardest.

Tanfastic · 19/06/2022 22:58

Op I suffered with this from a very young age too. I had all the same problems. I used to get all my school books wet and I never learnt to drive until after I got the problem. With my hands fixed.

Somanymistakes · 19/06/2022 23:05

I've been suffering from this for a couple of years now.

It's awful. I sweat so much all over my upper body from just walking. My head, back, chest. And it seems to be very salty because as it drys it leaves salt stains everywhere. I'm not hugely overweight and easily walk 15,000 steps a day, sometimes 20,000. Yet I sweat with the smallest of exertion.

It's really embarrassing. I soak tops. No one else is even sweating.

Wanderlustnearorfar · 21/06/2022 17:43

Hi, everyone, my goodness I’m surprised by all the posts as I haven’t had a chance to check in. I will read through them all and post. I have been diagnosed with palmar and plantar hyperhydrosis and manage it with iontophoresis the machine @CherryRipe1 has mentioned (good shout) it can be used with tap water and you can purchase it independently although they can be pricey and it can work really well with tap water however for me it doesn’t so I use a prescribed solution alongside it which helps manage it. It’s been trial and error trying different things to see what works. Even has palmar Botox and that was painful!

I have hyperhydrosis which is medication related. There doesn’t seem to be any help apart from changing drugs, which I can’t really do. My most problematic area is my scalp and face. My hair can literally be dripping with the slightest exertion. Coffee and alcohol make it worse.

DrFoxtrot · 23/06/2022 20:06

I'm affected by underarm and groin Blush sweating. I've always had this since my teen years. My sister was similar and my eldest daughter too.

I've sat with a fan between my knees A LOT to dry wet patches on clothing. I use Perspirex and Odaban, which is a spray that I can use for the groin sweating. It does help.

User48751490 · 23/06/2022 20:15

Under arms. Have been like this for years. Haven't seen a GP about it yet. Have started using Mitcham stick. See how I get on.

User48751490 · 23/06/2022 20:23

My problem is tops. Over the years I have had to chuck out tops because of the smell of BO. I wash at 40 degrees but can often notice the smell lingers. Anyone else have this issue?

I try to avoid coloured shirts, only white or black so damp patches are not as obvious.

Sympathies for everyone else suffering this problem 💐

CherryRipe1 · 23/06/2022 22:09

@User48751490 DD used to get bad stinky pits. I soaked her tops in diluted white vinegar or soda crystals then washed as normal and it got rid of the smell. I saw on TikTok or something a girl used sanitary pads under her arms to soak up the sweat & smell!

LateNightTalking · 11/08/2022 15:10

I am really suffering with excessive sweating. I'm already on HRT from medically induced menopause, I called yesterday to ask if it can be reviewed etc and they've referred me to the menopause clinic. Had my appointment through....for May 2024!!!

For me it's my top lip, back and behind my knees that are the worst. I don't really know what to do. I shower daily (mostly twice!), talc, anti perspirant etc. i used perspirex in my teens and it burned so don't fancy that again really.

I just cannot believe that we have to just live with it. I can feel the drops running, feel is me all the time and am always damp.
