Anyone had a very very slow healing fracture?

I broke my medial femoral condyle bone when hit by a car 9 weeks ago. Is on same side where I am a below knee amputee.

Review with consultant yesterday revealed little healing has taken place probably due to osteopenia. In the small range of outcomes was an above knee amputation. I cannot overstate how upset I am.

We are waiting until 6mnth post accident point to see but has anyone had a very slow healing fracture and what was your timeframe?

I've been given exogen ultrasound to use daily to stimulate bone growth. Anyone used this with success?

I can't contemplate life as an above knee amputee.

I broke my tib and fib. I had to have surgery and had two metal plates and 19 screws in my leg. I wasn’t weight bearing for 4 months. It was very slow in healing. No idea why?

How much longer than normal?

I'm so sorry to read that, Angelik. What a horrible thing to have to deal with.

My DD has had two very slow-healing fractures. She was 10, respectively 12, at the time and they were both in her lower spine. She had to wear a brace and we were told it would heal in six months maximum (or not at all). At six and nine months nothing had happened in either case but then at twelve months the MRIs suddenly showed healing. So in her case it took double the time. She's obviously much younger than you but who knows? Perhaps bodies heal at different rates?

What type of MFC fracture do you have?

Longdistance · 16/06/2022 23:08

It would usually take 12 weeks to be able to put weight on, but had to go back a few times for MRI’s and it worked out to be another month or so on top. I remember breaking it in the April and then I wasn’t weight baring until at least August, if not September as we went on holiday in the October. I just remember panicking that it wouldn’t heal by the time we were going on holiday.

I had ultrasound for a non-healing stress fracture of the tibia. It did the trick. I was in a boot for 9 months!m
Have you had your vitamin D checked? Mine was super low and bones need it to heal.

Angelik · 17/06/2022 06:45

I haven't had my vit d checked - where/how doni get that? I have started taking vit d/calcium supplements though consultant was a but meh about that.

@Longdistance our holidays are going to be very different. I'm having to buy a wheelchair today - despite being a life long amputee, i have always been mobile on my legs. Now the world looks very challenging.

@MacavityTheDentistsCat so there's hope! I need every tiny bit to cling on to. Doing my own deep Google research 😄 i think it's a Hoffa fracture but here is photo of CT scan. I've circled where the fracture is. If it displaces - game over so my other dilemma is how do I live right now? Stay absolutely still or allow myself some degree of mobility? Then there's work dilemma!

@dizzydizzydizzy did you experience pain with exogen ultrasound scan? I have been. Not when directly using it but in spots throughout the day

GP can do it but it is likely to be ok if you are taking supplements

@Angelik
Hi Angelik, I just found myself thinking about you. How are you getting on?

Nat6999 · 16/07/2022 02:53

My late dp fractured his disal humerus & due to the facts that he was an alcoholic & terrified of hospitals refused to have it plated, it took 12 weeks to show any signs of healing. I dosed him up on calcium supplements, made him take tons of vitamins & iron & it eventually healed very well.

@MacavityTheDentistsCat hello! Just saw your post. Hmm I'm not doing well mentally tbh. Managed to force myself to go on holiday with dh, ds and dd. In Portugal now. But I am quite bored because I can't do anything. Playing with dc a bit in pool but 15mins max as waterproof cover over cast is ruddy uncomfortable! Next batch of scans on 8 Aug then 2weeks until results. Hopefully healing is happening. I need to have some hope to hang onto. My thoughts are very dark at times.
