ask for a kit from gp/pharmacy. You get a syringe and a sterile pad. when there is wee on it, i think you can suck it up with syringe, otherwise, take plunger out of syringe and tear up pad (lovely job), put bit in syringe and press plunger in. That is how they do it in hospital

Hope you get sorted. let us know

lozza1985 · 14/01/2008 20:25

ah thats great dont know why doctor didnt suggest this ? thanks for your reply.x

If your Dr thinks your daughter could have diabetes, I'd suggest that he tests her with a finger prick device which will give a quick and accurate reading of her blood sugars. GPs can sometimes be a bit relaxed about this but it's really important that, if it is diabetes, it's diagnosed and treated very quickly. Please ring your GP's surgery in the morning and ask if you could bring her back in to have her blood sugars checked via a finger price. How is she tonight? If she becomes unwell overnight (esp vomiting), please get her seen by a Dr immediately. I don't mean to be alarmist but undiagnosed and therefore untreated T1 diabetes can be dangerous.

I hope she's okay and that she doesn't have diabetes but if she does there are a few parents on here with children with T1, as well as some adults who have the condition, who will give you lots of support.

I've just re-read your post and see you don't see your GP for another week. Please get it checked out tomorrow - don't wait around.

now you have mentioned symptoms, i would go tomoro, even if you just get nurse to do finger prick test. As Millie1 says it is not the sort of thing gp should be sitting on. have you got a minor injury/illness unit nearby, they may be able to help.

millie1 · 14/01/2008 21:05

Hi Lozza ... a year ago my then 3 year old DS started drinking heaps and soaking 2 nappies overnight. I suspected diabetes and took him to the GP. I took a sample with me and it was ++ for sugars and ketones. GP told me to come back the next day for a blood test but I asked him to do finger prick. Reading was pretty high and he wanted ds admitted that evening but I said to hold off overnight. When we eventually got to the hospital the next day, the paed went through me because of the danger I put my son in. We were lucky and he didn't develop a condition called ketoacidosis which is when blood sugars go really high ... it's extremely serious and is life threatening. In retrospect, I realised that DS had lost weight although he was in good form and running around, playing as normal.

I really feel for you especially having a section in a fortnight - you don't need this but you do need to get an answer on the diabetes asap. If your DD does have diabetes, then you have 2 weeks to start getting your head around it and to learn how to manage it before you have to go into hospital yourself.

Don't mind what your Dr says ... ring in the morning and insist on a finger prick test at the surgery. If they can't do it, just roll up to A&E. I know this may seem a bit OTT but you need to find out asap one way or the other. If she doesn't have diabetes, then BRILLIANT ... so what if you look like a paranoid Mummy but if she does have it, then your GP needs to pull his socks up a bit.

Please keep us posted ... I really don't mean to alarm you but it's better to play it safe.

I'm gonna second what Millie has said.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 9. I guess diabetes was less common then but my GP messed about and didn't test for diabetes and to make a long story short I went into a diabetic coma, my blood sugar was in the 40s.

In case that sounds alarming to put it in perspective i was very very ill, so tired I couldn't get off the couch and v dehydrated, had probably been ill for about 2 weeks.

Go back to the doctor, tell him your worried and get a finger prick test done.

I can't believe GPs are so blase about this

Sorry to go on Lozza

Good luck .. go and have a good night's sleep tonight!

LadyOfTheCauliFlowers · 14/01/2008 22:22

Last year, when Ds1 was about 1.5 I thought he was developing diabetes (DH has T1) so took him to docs and was told the same.
I asked if I could just use DHs machine and they said it was not the best way to diagnose diabetes, I don't know why though.
I was sent away with the pad, brought it back the same day and they tested it there and then.

lozza1985 · 15/01/2008 13:46

hi just a quick update took her back this morning he still didnt seem to bothered but gave me special pad , why he didnt give me this yesterday i dont know? just got a sample and have app with nurse at 4 pm . will she test it there and then does anybody know??

OP posts:
millie1 · 15/01/2008 17:04

Hope it went okay Lozza ... the nurse should have been able to dipstick the sample which would show up any trace of sugars or ketones. If they were raised, I hope they didn't fob you off to come back another day. Well done going back this morning - your GP is very relaxed - will look out for your update when you get the chance.

lozza1985 · 15/01/2008 20:13

hi , well took her back and its clear of sugar so thats great am so relieved had slight protein in she said she will send it of to lab . not really sue what having protein in your wee means?

OP posts:
emandjules · 15/01/2008 20:18

it could mean she has a urinary tract infection, if it is a trace of protein, if it is infection, should be mild.
Glad came back negative for diabetes,

paddyclamp · 15/01/2008 20:30

Phew that's a relief Lozza. Urinary infection would sure explain why she's been weeing loads!

lozza1985 · 15/01/2008 20:36

thanks guys , i was so relieved too didnt sleep a wink last night ! just got to wait a week for the results now .xxx

OP posts:
emandjules · 15/01/2008 20:39

it could also be a false positive for protein, The patients on our ward often have protein positive trace, but no infection. If it was a bad UTI there would be blood in aswell and that would have been picked up on test.

millie1 · 15/01/2008 22:10

That's absolutely fantastic Lozza and explains the wee'ing. Well worth ruling diabetes out and gives you peace of mind on that front. Sorry you didn't sleep last night and also sorry if you were alarmed but relieved it's not D. Hope she feels better soon
