I'd never heard of it before today. Dr diagnosed it.

Probably picked up in first week of school last week .

He's got the rash now so prob not infectious anymore. Hopefully back in later in the week?????? I'm not bothered about him being at home but am a bit bothered by it only being his second week in iyswim.

Some info here

Dd had it when she was in Reception. It's really, really common and usually very mild - most people have had it without even noticing.

Once he feels better he's fine for school - once the rash shows it's no longer infectious.

Hope he feels better soon.

Thanks WigWagBam - will read that through.

it's 'slapped cheek' ..mild viral illness .. lasts a couple of days ... calpol / nurofen

ComeOVeneer · 14/01/2008 20:12

Funnily enogh dd and her bf came out of school with very pink cheeks today. Both myself and bf's mother confided in each other "do you think it could be slapped cheek?" but as WWB said once that symptom shows they are no longer contagious. Having said that by bed time it had gone down (But it can come and go, so...)

5th most common viral infection amongst children

WigWamBam · 14/01/2008 20:15

Which is why it's also called Fifth Disease.

JossStick · 14/01/2008 20:20

at 'smacked' - of course it's Slapped Cheek

Thanks everyone.

I'm not TOO worried about him having it - it's just a shame he's missing his second week of school.

comeOveneer - you're not in Shropshire are you?

He doesn't need to stay of school. At least with our school it wasn't a keep at home infection.

WigWamBam · 14/01/2008 20:55

Or erythema infectiosum, if I'm not very much mistaken ...

Twiglett · 14/01/2008 21:09

you googled that

WigWamBam · 14/01/2008 21:52

Did not!

chipmonkey · 14/01/2008 23:52

Ds3 had this just before Christmas! I'm in Ireland, though, amazing how these things spread! It did recur once about a week later ( Someone here on MN told me it would) but he was fine. For some reason found Calpol better than Neurofen. Usually it's the other way round!

NoBiggy · 14/01/2008 23:57

DD just got over it, first day rash-free since last Tuesday.

GP advised staying away from pregnant women, but as she would have been infectious before there was any sign, and it's dangerous in the first trimester when there's not much sign of that either, it was a bit of a hopeless task.
