Why does my eye keep getting bloodshot?

A few weeks ago my right eye was bloodshot with no obvious cause. No big deal, and it cleared up after a day or two. But then it happened again a couple of weeks later, and then again a couple of weeks after that. Always the same place (right eye, on the side closer to the nose). No pain or infection or anything.

Any idea why this could be happening? Should I go to the doctor or would that be an overreaction?

What sort of bloodshot?
do you wear contact lenses?

Elieza · 14/06/2022 22:36

When’s the last time you checked your blood pressure?

Were you stressed or exercising at the time so it could have been raised at the time even if ok now?

Id be getting mine checked. Probably on my home arm cuff in the first instance as it’s not easy to get a GP appt. But bp is important so I’d defo look into it.

Thanks for the replies.

I don't wear contact lenses.

I haven't had my blood pressure checked for ages. It's always been fine in the past, but maybe I should invest in a home arm cuff. I'm not sure if I was exercising at the time - it's possible. The thing is that I don't even feel it when it happens, so it's only when I look in the mirror or someone points it out to me that I notice.

@Elieza If it was due to temporary raised blood pressure (as opposed to consistently raised), is that a problem do you think?

I second the blood pressure possibility.

DM went to the local pharmacy for something else. The pharmacist was alarmed to see her bloodshot eye (appeared suddenly the day before) and recommended she went to the GP there and then for an urgent appointment.

She's now on medication for it and all is well. She'd never had any BP issues before, just once in very stressful circumstances. She had been very stressed lately too, unbeknownst to me.

My DH has this happen quite frequently. He has low-normal blood pressure, so it’s not that in his case. We’ve never got to the bottom of it.

Hayfever?

FrancescaJade1 · 15/06/2022 08:13

Hiya...Are you pregnant ? I've had this. Am 7 months now, and had an awful chest infection. The coughing, retching and preggo sickness did it. Diabetes can also cause it, so maybe get checked out babe x

Are you on any steroid medications- even asthma inhalers? Steroids can cause thinning of the skin and this can also affect the membranes of the eyes. Dry eyes can also cause the same issues (also google something called Sjorgens). Invest in some very good moisturising eye drops.

JolieJ · 15/06/2022 08:45

Dry eyes?
Mine do this because I have dry eyes and it's usually in the morning when i wake up.

Try getting some eye drops for dry eyes

Definately get your blood pressure checked, this could be a sign of high blood pressure.

MissSmiley · 15/06/2022 09:06

I get this, I've been to the hospital and had it checked, it's probably just a weak blood vessel, sometimes it's just a round patch and occasionally it's been the whole of my left eye fills with blood, it hasn't actually happened for ages, I did wonder at one stage of it was stress related, it's been on and off like this for about 15 years, my mum gets it too

GreatCrash · 15/06/2022 12:08

Thanks for all the replies, I really appreciate your help. I'm not pregnant or on any medication and I don't get hay fever.

I think I'll make a doctors appointment because the comments about high blood pressure have worried me slightly. But it's also reassuring to hear from people who seem to get this despite being healthy!

Sometimes, if you are not taking sleep for the right time and also using smart devices for many hours will also cause this issues, better to seek eyes doctor advices, Don't take any eyes drops with your own risk.
