I seem to smell cigarette smoke all the time. No-one is smoking around me at all! What's going on?

Have you had covid recently? I had it back in September and now have Phantosmia.

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 10/06/2022 20:57

Came on to ask if you’ve had Covid, too. I had it back in early May and all I could smell for weeks was a petrol engine smell. Awful!

BeetyAxe · 10/06/2022 20:58

I also had covid in September and also have Phantosmia. Smell smoke frequently, but I have another smell which is my overriding smell all the time. It sucks

forlornlorna1 · 10/06/2022 21:02

I've been smelling smoke since januarys dose of Covid (second time I've had it)

ChristinePerfect · 10/06/2022 21:03

If not Covid then it could be your sinuses

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/06/2022 21:04

you should call your GP surgery for advice: there are various conditions that can cause you to smell things that aren’t there.

OrangeVelour · 10/06/2022 21:06

Same here! Mild Covid in September and now I keep thinking I can smell tobacco all the time, even though no-one in the house smokes!

Brenna24 · 10/06/2022 21:07

I get phantosmia when pregnant. In my case everything smells of overripe bananas. Definitely worth speaking to your GP though if it hasn't been brought on by a bout of COVID.

MiddleOfThePack · 10/06/2022 22:15

I did have covid in April. Defo not pregnant (firmly in menopause)!

There was an article recently in the BMJ about post covid parosmia. It said it seems to start around 3 months after covid infection, so hopefully it’s linked to that in your case. If you are at all worried it’s always worth speaking to your gp,

Migraine is preceded by the smell of smoke for me. So sharp it stings my nostrils!

indoorplantqueen · 10/06/2022 22:33

I had this too a few months back and only just remembered it stopped. I've had covid twice so perhaps it is related.

ItWillBeOkHonestly · 10/06/2022 23:57

I had Covid back in November and lost my sense of smell but when it came back, I constantly had this smoky smell around me. At times it was so strong it would wake me up in the wee hours! The smell then sort of morphed into smoke with an orange/citrus overtone (which was much more pleasant). It now seems to have mostly gone away but every few weeks, it'll momentarily pop its head back up!

Donotgogentle · 11/06/2022 00:00

I had Covid in October and started smelling cigarette smoke in around December /Jan. It’s stopped now thank god.

FatFilledTrottyPuss · 11/06/2022 00:21

I got phantosmia when pregnant too, 14 years ago. I still get it every now and again, either smoke or a really strong artificial citrus scent. It’s my sinuses playing up usually but sounds like yours is probably covid related.
I hope you get back to normal soon, it’s a horrible condition 😷
