Optician has referred my daughter to neurologist??

Hi daughter had a general appointment with optician but a look at back of eye shows swelling? She is referring her to neurologist but I'm assuming it's not imminently as she is writing to neurologist and we wasn't sent to a&e. She said it could be something like a tumor but not to worry as could be nothing . So I'm wondering what could it be. Surely if they were concerned they would have sent us to a&e

Opticians take a very careful careful approach, they do lots of referrals (check advanced search on here, I've seen 2 other threads in the last week about this) and very often it's nothing.

I know it's harder said than done but try not to worry too much.

Here's one of the threads

Hoping for some reassurance! Eye test and referral to eye hospital. http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/4558922-hoping-for-some-reassurance-eye-test-and-referral-to-eye-hospital

The fact they didn’t send an emergency referral tells me they don’t think it’s a tumour. It is more likely to be a crowded optic nerve if your DD is very hyperopic (nothing to worry about), a tilted optic nerve if DD is very astigmatic (nothing to worry about), an optic nerve with indistinct margins if DD is very myopic (nothing to worry about), or optic nerve drusen (again, nothing to worry about!!!). Usually a truly swollen optic nerve is symptomatic and your DD would have severe headaches, nausea, blurred vision.

Opticians are great! My dh’s glaucoma was picked up by an eye test. I woke up one morning with a snowstorm of floaters in one eye. I felt a bit silly but they did a thorough check, said it was good to check as I was fine, but a guy who’d gone in earlier that day was sent straight to hospital with a detached retina.
I really hope your Dd gets seen soon and tgat all is well op.

Yes she does have frequent headaches and more recently room seems to fill with fog. The headache have been going on for few years now and paediatrician as I did, thought it was due to her anxiety with school. She has autism and adhd.
They pointed out the picture that it is uneven which shows pressure.
I am reassured a little that it was a direct referral to a&e but I would like to know more so I am prepared as I was a bit blazé about it all as didn't feel worried then but now I'm trying to find possibilities other than a tumor

I had this. Had it checked. Was fine. Hope it's the same in this case too!

The referral criteria regarding swelling in one eye compared to both eyes is very different.
Quite a few of our urgent referral criteria are A1:referral to A&E, but we’re usually able to speak to a professional within ophthalmic care. If you do have an urgent eye care issue, it is often worth seeing if you can get an appointment with your optometrist.

I had a similar situation with my daughter. She was getting daily headaches that I had put down to anxiety but I took her to a neurologist and after examining her eyes he referred her for a MRI. He was concerned because she had blurred disc margins which could indicate something (eg a tumour) putting pressure on the optic nerve. So, a bit scary but the MRI was normal and apparently some people do just have blurred disc margins and it’s nothing to worry about. A friend had a v similar experience with her daughter, who was referred for a MRI after an optician’s appointment showed the same thing and again it was all fine. So, obviously get it checked out (as you are, of course) but please try not to worry.

My daughter is now taking migraine medication for the headaches and they’re much better.

That sounds very similar to my daughter about the margins. Hopefully the optician just being cautious

Just been through this.
Ours was emergency and turns out it was something but all cured now. No tumour.

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension shows as papillodema, (pressure on the optic nerve).

Notcoolmum · 03/06/2022 22:20

We had this too. A&E said the enlarged optic nerve was just normal for my DD. No further action needed. I was very worried. I hope everything is ok.

FawnFrenchieMum · 03/06/2022 22:29

DS was sent straight the the eye a&e following a routine eye appointment. Everything was fine though, they showed me what the opticians had seen but said they were happy it was nothing to worry about and gave me a copy of the images from the back of his eyes and said to ask any future opticians to compare his new images to those ones and just look for changes rather then what ever they normally look at.

concernedrepurplehouse · 05/06/2022 08:19

A bleed under the skull. Not likely in your daughters case as her headaches have been going on for years.
best of luck with it. Is it a long wait?
