Dd was hit on the head by the car boot - hospital or not?

It happened around 2 hrs ago; I was closing the boot and she snuck up on me, and the corner hit the top/front of her head.

She is 3 btw. The problem is that she is poorly today anyway, she's got a stinking cold and has had nasty high temps all day so has been generally lying down whimpering. There has been none of the warning signs such as vomiting, loss of consciousness etc but it's hard to tell how affected or not she is beacuse of not being herself anyway.

There is a small cut and she's now asleep and snoring, she has had her hood on over her face since it happened and refuses to let anyone near her at all! I have phoned nhs direct and am waiting fo a call back. Do you reckon a trip to a & e is in order, or am I being paranoid?

I'd wait and see, my DC have frequent collisions with all sorts and tend to be OK. You do need to check if there's a bump, if there is it should be fine, if not A&E straighaway. Heads always blled a bit internally from even light pressure, if there isn't a bump it means the pressure is going internally. Keep an eye on her but |I'm sure she'll be fine.

sorry 'bleed' can't spell tonight - or any time really

milkymill · 12/01/2008 18:42

There's no bump. Worried sick now

This happened to my ds , he snuck up & i did not know he was there, i slammed the boot & his head got hit

He had a lump & bruise but not blood, he was fine but i did keep an eye on him.

I would look out for, vomiting, dizzyness & can she focus her eyes on you?

TheYoungVisiter · 12/01/2008 18:47

I'm not a medic but is that correct about no bump being a sign of internal bleeding ? Surely unless the skull is cracked bleeding inside the skull wouldn't result in a bump outside the skull...?

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 12/01/2008 18:49

I did this with my then 3 year old. She cried and cried, I did the cold thing and got a CM at school who used to be a nurse to check her out. She was fine.

TheYoungVisiter · 12/01/2008 18:49

by the way, sorry for your DD Milkymill. I'd do whatever NHS direct say, and try not to worry too much.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 12/01/2008 18:50

If she goes blue around the eyes she must be seen.

lucyellensmum · 12/01/2008 18:52

tbh, i think any bump on the head is worth checking out. One thing you could do is shine a torch in her eyes and make sure the irises contract. Maybe a call do NHS direct would be enough to put mind at rest.

NAB, why do you have to be concerned with blueness around the eyes? (mnet is sooo good for learning new things )

milkymill · 12/01/2008 19:01

Thanks everyone. Just spoke to the nurse and she doesn't seem to be worried about head injury from what I've said. Still won't stop me worrying all night though.

milky, you wouldnt be a good mum if you didnt worry. But you have done all the right things. DD has probably forgotten all about the sky falling on her head now
