so how evil is medised, exactly?

just been to the pharmacy and overheard the pharmacist telling another mum off for wanting to buy medised (he doesn't stock it because he thinks it is awful). I asked what was so terrible about it and don't think I got an answer - just a bit of a rant. This was the first I'd heard about the badness of medised. Anyone know what Mr Pharmacist was on about?

Actually I do know a couple of parents who say that medised doesn't make their dcs sleep and I would imagine that the E numbers is the reason why.
But it doesn't have that effect on dd and we don't use it often anyway so.....

MuffinMclay · 12/01/2008 15:30

It makes ds hyper and results in very unpleasant nappies.

MrsDanvers · 12/01/2008 15:54

THis is just typical of the times we all live in now where all parents seem to be under suspicion for mistreating their children at the slightest opportunity. Most of us are responsible and the small minority that aren't need support and help- where appropriate.

binkleandflip · 12/01/2008 16:07

I use it myself when I cant sleep. It is pretty potent stuff. Use it very sparingly and rarely for dd when she is coughing a lot in the night

Seona1973 · 12/01/2008 20:01

The new Calcold and Calpol night are both similar to medised as they both have paracetamol and the anti-histamine diphenhydramine hydrochloride. My ds prefers the Calcold to the medised but to me they both taste disgusting. I only use it when my lo's are full of the cold and snotty - I have never noticed a difference in sleep i.e. they dont sleep any better or worse when taking them.

hotbot · 12/01/2008 20:19

i used it for myself and saw spiders.... therefore not using it for dd, tho different people different reactions. and i prob took too much for myself, down the hatch -stylee

Blimey, it flies off the shelves in our local pharmacy at this time of year - can just imagine locals' reactions to a pharmacist lecturing them on the Badness of Medised

We hardly ever used it for dd1, just heavy heavy colds, but dd2 has a floppy larynx and narrow airway, which clogs easily with snot, and has had endless choky snotty colds this winter. She wakes up every time, she gets very upset, its very scary to hear, and none of us get any sleep: so I shamelessly admit to using it, at night only, on many occasions between September and December - and it makes all the difference, in her case.

Along with a humidifier, Karvol, raised bed head, reflux meds, and lots of rocking and cuddling.

Also, rarely, use it myself when very very coldy, on basis that it has no alcohol in it and thus better for me (can't take alcohol) than grownup equivalents.

Honestly, used appropriately, I think its a godsend.

Both ds's have awful coughs/colds at the moment and haven't had much sleep the last couple of days.Bought some Medised today which they've both had,and so far they're both fast asleep with hardly any coughing. Was previously giving Calpol,Neurofen and Tixylix syrup(to ds2) and the pharmacist recommended using Medised and Neurofen instead. So far I haven't needed to use the Neurofen which is good as it has ben making ds2 a little sick.

GodzillasUnrecognizedBumcheek · 12/01/2008 22:47

Better than sticking whisky in their bedtime milk i guess?

OverMyDeadBody · 12/01/2008 22:50

maybe this is why?

Bluenosesaint · 12/01/2008 22:51

Is my dd the only child to which Medised has absolutely no effect one way or the other??

PussinJimmyChoos · 12/01/2008 22:52

I very rarely give it to DS....however, works a treat for me when I really need a good night's kip.......

Spink · 13/01/2008 12:21

OverMyDeadBody - it is crazy that stuff banned from food is allowed in medicines!! blimey. mind you, he'd be stocking hardly any childrens' meds if that is his reasoning. So strange how all manner of shit goes into childrens' 'health' products. Reminds me of the vaccination thing, wasn't it only recently that preservatives and additives like formaldehyde and mercury stopped being used in those??

We got refused sale recently, the pharmacist just said no with no explaination or anything he just said he didn't think DS needed it .

Our GP had actually recommmended it as DS had a hugely blocked nose was having trouble feeding and sleeping. So the next day I just marched into the pharmacy and said I would like a bottle of medised please, he again asked why and I just stared him in the eye and told him the GP had told us to get some. He did sell it to me but I could tell he wasn't happy about it. Anyway it was fab for DS his snotty nose dried up and he slept ok.

Although DP did drink the rest of the bottle over the next week as he couldn't sleep so I have to get some more now anyway

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 13/01/2008 12:44

I'd never heard of Medised before MN. I can't say I'm desperate to try it either.

I would recommend parental insomnia - DH & I aren't really affected by ill children not sleeping at night because we're awake anyway.

Over xmas my nephew was rushed to hospital with suspected pneumonia. The paramedics recommended medised to my sister.

the anti-histamine acts as a mild sedative, similar compound found in the night time Calpol and some hayfever remedies.

Medically speaking nothing sinister so far as I can see
