Sudden mouth sensitivity after eating

In the last few days I have had a sort of allergic reaction inside my mouth after eating. It seems quite random. For instance I had lunch with no effects but after dinner my mouth felt sore and slightly swollen inside, started easing after an hour or so.

it’s quite alarming.

It happened after: a big salad with spinach and tomatoes and nuts and apple and balsamic vinegar. (But I ate a handful of nuts prior to this with no effect).

Baked potatoes, low fat beans, cheese, Benocol

a little bit of raspberry jam while I was baking.

Recently it has also happened after eating fudge.

So random and slightly worrying. I don’t have hay fever and have no known allergies.

Could this be hormonal? I am on HRT. or any other thoughts? Thanks!

Eating anything can be an issue if my b12 levels are low and my mouth is sore as a result. How do you feel generally? Go ask for some blood tests. Iron b12

MarilynValentine · 18/05/2022 22:52

Wow that’s interesting. I had my B12 checked a few years ago and all ok but not since then.

I’ve recently stopped taking multivitamins (just through forgetting to reorder them) so that is interesting, thank you.

If your mouth was swollen you need to discuss with your gp!

MarilynValentine · 18/05/2022 22:57

Yes I will go to the gp, you’re right.

I've been getting similar, my tongue particularly feels sore. I've been getting all sorts of weird things since a bad bout of covid in February, itching all over, terrible joint pains in my hands and wrists, painful mouth, terrible cold sores all round my mouth and up my nose. I'm assuming mine are all linked to covid but I don't know for sure. Pharmacist said I needed a good multi vitamin and I think that is starting to help.

HairyBum · 19/05/2022 06:12

Avoid taking the vitamins until you have blood test results back as b12 tablets can give misleading higher results when in fact b12 injections are required to resolve things. Let me know the exact results if you like, you’ll be able to access them. The nhs ok range for b12 is very low, in reality you can be above range and poorly so told you’re totally fine by a Gp. The nhs often fail people with b12 issues, in both diagnosis or treatment.

Both I and my daughter have what used to be called oral allergy syndrome and we both have reactions when we eat certain raw foods eg banana, avocado, apple, pear, sugar snap peas. It seems to be linked to the hay fever/asthma we both have. I spent all my childhood assuming that the awful feelings in my mouth were normal and wondered how people liked eating fruit! It’s got worse as I’ve got older. DD has had swollen throat and tongue from cherries and we now don’t have them in the house.
id get it checked out

MarilynValentine · 19/05/2022 09:51

Thanks @Sooverthemill what should I ask for at the GP’s? Blood tests/allergy tests I assume?

Yes I think get an appointment and take with you a list of everything that happens when you eat and a list of all the foods you know do this. Might be worth keeping a good/symptom diary. Ask if you can bd referred of if she/he can suggest something. I would take antihistamine too

Sooverthemill · 19/05/2022 10:07

Incidentally I only realised I had a ‘thing’ when a dietitian started asking questions about DD ( she has a number of chronic conditions) and her food . I hadn’t realised she also had it because like me she never knew it was odd having had it her whole life

I’ve had this in the past - had all the tests, as a diagnosis of last resort - anxiety was suggested, I wasn’t anxious or stressed but it’s now on my health record and I can’t get it removed - which meant when I actually did have anxiety after my father died - the insurance company said I had previous and wouldn’t cover me. Any how I avoided foods that caused it - usually carb based foods but sometimes it was more random, for a while toothpaste - I changed to a more natural formula. it’s gone at the moment. This was a case of doctors not having a clue - I get that a lot!
