7 wk old in pain with bloody green poo - help!

For about a week now my exclusively breastfed 7 wk old dd has had really horrible nappies. It started out with dark brown, smelly, explosive poo and over the last two days has changed to bright green poo with lots of blood in it.

She seems in pain when passing wind and has windy explosive poos. She strains when she does them which i suppose could explain the blood, but is there anything else which would explain it?

She's definitely getting hind milk and manages to empty the breast well, so i don't understand the green poo either.

I found info on dairy allergies, but if it was a dairy allergy, why would it only start now?

I phoned the GP who sent off a sample, but in the meantime i wondering what it could be and what i can do to help her. She is very unhappy and i don't know what to do.

If anyone has any ideas i'd be grateful.

oh lucky, I don't know but hopefully someone will arrive soon who does.
poor dd

my DS had very similar, yes it was dairy allergy, could you try reducing your dairy intake and see if anything happens.
poor baby.

tbh i would take her back to the gp. it's not fair on her to be unhappy (that aimed at gp not at you)

To be honest, with repeated fresh blood in poo and obvious discomfort I would go to A&E. Most likely no big deal but 7 weeks is still so weeney I'd want it checked by a paediatric specialist.

Gigglewitch - my diet has so much dairy in it, i wouldn't know what to eat instead, but if it helps then i will cut it out. I was wondering why it took this long before it had an effect? How long did it take before your DS felt better?

Chrissnow - i have an appt on Monday with GP, but there's nothing they can do until they find out what it is.

All i'm doing is constant feeding, in case it's a virus and i can help to clear it.

we didnt figure out what the prob was til he was 20 months...by which time he was really ill
Really think you should seek medical advice asap, if there is any more blood turn up at A&E and refuse to move til they have tested him, collected blood/wee/poo/everything. I really wish i had been given this sort of advice early on, it boggles my mind now that we took all the fobbing off and believed people who said it was wind / teething / colic...

probably stating the obvious, but have you tried nhs direct?
Try to avoid friday night a&e if you feel you can wait.

green poo is normal: our two had it and were exclusively bf'd. but check out teh blood bit. you are probably right about teh straining but i'd phone if only for peace of mind.
