Any dentists about? Question about possible abscess

6 weeks ago I visited a new dentist as I'm keen to have invisalign. After the xray and check-up, I needed to come back a have a deep filling replaced.

Since then, I haven't not been in mild pain and my cheek on that side is slightly swollen - perhaps only noticeable to me. I went back and the dentist redid the filling. I still have the same pain and swelling 2 weeks on.

It's a niggling pain. It's not constant but there at least part of the day, and I can distract myself from it.

Is it likely an abscess? Wouldn't the dentist have seen hat it's an abscess when I went back or can they be small and hidden? The tooth itself is tender but not painful like toothache when you are in tears and can't sleep!

I assumed for a few weeks I was grinding my teeth and causing the discomfort, which does at times radiate from my gums, up my face. Could it have been caused by the injection?

Hiya,
Sounds like an abscess unfortunately. They can be difficult to diagnose especially in a molar as it has more than 1 root each with a nerve. This happens with any tooth with a deep filling and sometimes the tooth is very sick anyway (from the damage due to the previous decay) and changing the filling especially if there's wear/failure of the filling or decay can hasten it's demise. Book an emergency appointment, make sure you mention there's swelling and you're looking at needing a root canal treatment or an extraction

OK, thanks for the confirmation. It was wishful thinking hoping it would be something else. Thats going to be painful paying for a root canal 6 weeks after a filling 😲

Sounds like the nerve in the tooth is dying, fairly common after deep fillings. Definitely go back and mention the swelling and tenderness.
