depends but its a lot of very precise exercises based around good posture, getting better muscle control (ie focussing on exercising particular muscle groups) . you can use equipment to help (eg something called a reformer that is like an exercise bench with pulleys you can use to add extra tension on various exercises).

In terms of what its most like -its the stretching or precise free weights you might do in a gym or certain yoga or body balacne exercises.

does it hurt? well you do feel you've done somehting but I've never felt as stiff or painful as after a very vigorous yoga session or gym session.

it also makes a huge difference to posture and muscle tone.

It involves a lot of holding in your abdominal muscles and pelvic floor. You don't get out of breath and may not even break sweat because movements are slow but you do know about it afterwards. It's about stretching and flexing muscles, and may involve a lot of lying on the floor.

Not specifically, but I always felt good afterwards.

I have a Lynne Robinson (Badgerwoman) DVD and found it excellent. I haven't done it in ages but used to do 20 mins each morning before work - not at all painful, very calming. I found it made my back much stronger. Previously, on the 1 day a month that my job involved lifting equipment in & out of my car I had to plan to do NOTHING that night as I would e a wreck. After a few months of Pilates I lifted the kit in & out 3 times one day with no ill effects

Thanks for reminding me to restart - getting a bit sore again carrying 18lb baby round

Yoga is great for stress. I used to do a "yogalates" type class which combined yoga and pilates. We always had a 10 minute relaxation session at the end with plinky japanese music which was fab!
