Fatty liver advice please

DudududuuuOhYeahOhYeahDuuduuduuduuduu · 15/05/2022 18:29

On Friday afternoon I had a scan following some upper torso pain and all seemed ok but the sonographer did say I had a very fatty liver.

I'm 25 and I am overweight but I'm trying to lose weight.

Can anyone advise how you treat a fatty liver? What helps/ any remedies or vitamins?

Thanks in advance for the replies.
Doctor due to call this week sometime but everything else seemed ok just the fatty liver.

Anyone experienced this or a HCP to advise?

I've had the same diagnosis, also following right hand side, under my ribs pain. Due to covid I didn't get a f2f appt, but a long phone message left for me. The upshot - lose weight. That's it.

Thanks @DrMadelineMaxwell I am definitely mindful of my diet now and I've upped my steps to ensure I'm moving more in general. I was not suggesting there was a magic cure or elixir I could purchase - only wondering if anyone had any advice that's all!

I also recently found out I have a fatty liver. From what I've read (as my dr seemed disinterested and just told me she would repeat bloods in 3 years!!!) Low sugar and carb seems to be good and apparently Mediterranean diet. Have you had bloods done, if not I presume they would be doing these soon, I had them and then dr used them to calculate a Fib 4 score which gives an indication of whether or not there is likely to be scarring.

afaik, lots of physical activity (exercise) is very effective against internal fat accumulation

Supersimkin2 · 16/05/2022 18:17

Lose weight. That’s it.

WakeWaterWalk · 16/05/2022 18:24

Vitamins and herbs would be a waste of money imo.
Lose weight, eat fewer carbs.
Oh and if you drink sugary drinks definitely stop that.

WakeWaterWalk · 16/05/2022 18:26

Also seemingly healthy swaps like fruit juice wouldn't be great for a fatty liver either.

WakeWaterWalk · 16/05/2022 18:29

Google fructose and fatty liver.

Sqeebling · 16/05/2022 18:30

Basic diet of meat and veg for a while - cut down on carbs as they convert to sugar etc

Just make a lot of stir fry's till you get your head around creating a healthy eating plan

Try to walk as much as you can for 30 minutes a day

Sqeebling · 16/05/2022 18:32

A fatty liver will eventually kill you so you need to do something asap esp as you are very young still

vasi34 · 16/05/2022 18:32

Lose weight, low sugar and NO ALCOHOL.

Wartywart · 16/05/2022 18:38

How much alcohol do you drink each week?

DudududuuuOhYeahOhYeahDuuduuduuduuduu · 16/05/2022 18:52

No alcohol ever.
Honestly.
I had salad for lunch with boiled eggs and I'm going to have a look at some recipes to see what is recommended. Thanks all.

Good luck op.
You can make a lot of positive changes and be young enough to reap massive benefits!

Wartywart · 16/05/2022 19:03

Ok, so no alcohol is good. Hopefully the weight loss plan will do it. Good luck - glad doctor spotted it while you're so young - you can definitely turn this around!

I recently heard that drastic calorie reduction diets can be very good for initiating fat loss around organs. Don’t know much about it so apols for being vague. Might be complete bollocks but it’s worth a Google.

samthebordercollie · 17/05/2022 10:48

Read Jason Fung's book The Obesity code, there is some good advice in that, but basically no sugar or refined grains in your diet, lots of fibre (vegetables), good fats which will fill you up, no need for useless calorie counting:

I am awaiting a liver scan for the same thing OP, I had a wake up call last week following the results of a routine blood test. They came back with 19.ml Glucose Plasma and abnormal liver and very high cholesterol (9). Like you I am making massive changes to my diet. I have given up smoking, and now live on low fat, low carb, low sugar foods. (I have lost 7 pounds over the last 2weeks, and have about 4 stone to go)

I am waiting for a liver scan but from my blood test results and using the calculator on line my FIB 4 result is 3.25 - which is not good. I am 57 and gained 4 stone in lockdown and am now type 2 diabetic.

If you want a weight loss buddy and someone to share the highs and lows of this situation we find ourselves in, I am here.

Do you know if you can reduce the FIB 4 result by diet and exercise or once your liver is scarred is that it? I have the scan next month to see whats going on. I also dont drink alcohol but the doctor thinks my cholesterol is familial hypercholesterolaemia and this could be the cause as both my parents (who were slim and healthy) had high cholesterol too.

Anyway, we can only take one day at a time, there is no alternative.

I start each day with a Benecol drink to lower cholesterol
Porridge and Berries
Lunch is soup and a couple of ryvita or chicken salad
Dinner is a healthy version of anything I like, I have exchanged white carbs for brown rice, wholewheat pasta and no longer eat bread, cakes biscuits etc.
I have a small portion of almonds or Walnuts and sunflower seeds as snacks
for desert I have reduced calorie (10 cal pots of jelly and low fat yoghurt)
I add at least half a plate of veg and have started eating plums as they are in season and very good antioxidants, reducing sugar levels and cholesterol
2-3 litre of water each day
Soy milk instead of dairy

Hope that helps :)
