my Mum has shingles - can my newborn catch chickenpox?

My mum has just gone down with Shingles. We saw her 14 days ago and she cuddled our new baby (he is 4.5 wks now, but was 7 wks prem).

Whats the incubation period for Shingles? And will ds2 have immunity from my antibodies (I've had chickenpox)?

Aagh aagh aagh

And if he gets it - will he end up back in hospital?

If you are b/feeding you should have passed your immunity on.

beansprout · 11/01/2008 18:09

But it's worth checking I think.

belgo · 11/01/2008 18:09

he's unlikely to catch it, unless he's had direct contact with her rash.

He will probably also have some protection from your antibodies, although this isn't always the case.

Try not to worry.

I think shingles is only contagious by contact with the blisters.

It is not as transmissable as Chicken pox.

scorpio1 · 11/01/2008 18:10

i have had chickenpox and ds2 had it at 12 weeks. he was fine, it was atually milder than ds1's chickenpox (2.7)

IIRC you can catch CP from shingles (but not the other way round) although I'm not sure just how contagious/transmissible it is.

My dd2 caught cp at a few eeks old despite being bf and I was immune. I also think you need to touch the rash to get cp from shingles.

My husband had shingles, our son got chicken pox. Not sure if he was in contact with the blisters though, they were between dh's shoulder blades, but we all co-slept then. He was 3 at the time.

oh, oh, and breathe ...

Sorry, panicked there.

I just googled it and you're right, you can only get cp from direct contact with shingles blisters. Phew.

Now I'm not panicing any more I can go and feel sympathy for my mum!

(how do you spell panicked / panicing? doesn't look right; paniking nope not that either)

I had shingles when dd2 was only 10 days old - nightmare! I had it in one strip on my back. Doctor said I could only give dd1 or dd2 chicken pox if they came into direct contact with my rash and in any event dd2 would probably be protected as I was breatfeeding. Since the rash was only in one place on my back, it was relatively easy to keep covered and as a result, neither dd2 or 1 for that matter caught CP.
