Can anyone explain this? (Post fracture)

Ankle (tibia and fibula) fracture plus ligament damage. Had surgery 11 days ago for metal plate and screws etc. Also a screw to join the two fractured bones.

Anyway, I've generally been coping ok with the pain since the op and making sure to keep my leg elevated as much as possible. My leg is probably elevated for 22-23 hours of the day.

The past three nights I have woken with a burning stabbing type pain at the back of the foot (so not even the sight of the stitches/plate/screws). It's not painful enough to make me wince out loud but painful enough that it's stopping me sleeping.

Yesterday I had co-codamol before bed and then an hour later I was disturbed by the pain. I woke every hour last night because of it.

Other than that it's so far been fine in the day apart from yesterday afternoon but I just shuffled to another (elevated) position and managed it.

The weird thing is, the only thing that stops the pain almost instantly is lowering my leg to the ground. It's like at night time my leg is being affected by elevation? I want to do what feels comfortable but at the same time I've been told to keep it elevated...?

I'm seeing my consultant on Monday so I'll mention it then but I just wondered if anyone had any insight.

Otherwise I feel well, no numbness, change of colour in the toes etc. and lately I've been managing without pain relief in the day. It's just the night time issue... Thank you.

22-23 hours elevation seems a lot. Have you been given any exercises to do ?

OuchOuchOuch6 · 13/05/2022 08:07

It does seem a lot doesn't it. But I've been under strict instructions to keep it elevated as much as possible so I've only been getting up for food, toilet trips, shower etc.

I haven't been given exercises aside from wiggling my toes for circulation. I have however been doing leg raises, and carefully bringing my knee towards my chest.

Might be nerve pain? Nerves have been disturbed so pain referred from accident site?
You poor lady. I hope your consultant is reassuring. Get well soon.

You need to move your calf to prevent DVT’s, and having your leg pressing on that area that much won’t help.
Id be trying to move my calf periodically through the day, and be aware of the signs of DVT.

Pressure sore?

OuchOuchOuch6 · 13/05/2022 08:19

Thank you both.

KangarooKenny, I have been tensing/releasing my calf periodically throughout the day, I forgot the mention that. And I'm having daily injections to avoid risk of DVT too.

Maybe it is never pain. Didn't realise it could be so painful!

Wouldn't I feel a pressure sore throughout the day too if it was that?
